Trump Issues Final Warning

President Trump on Friday reaffirmed his support for tariffs, warning that losing presidential authority to impose them would significantly weaken America’s economy and national security as the Supreme Court reviews a major legal challenge.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said tariffs have played a critical role in protecting U.S. industries and strengthening the nation’s global standing, particularly against countries he says have taken advantage of unfair trade practices.

Trump said tariffs have delivered major advantages for the nation, improving both economic strength and national security, and warned that surrendering that authority would seriously harm the United States.

The administration previously defended the policy before the Supreme Court, where several justices questioned whether the executive branch has broad authority to impose large-scale import taxes without explicit approval from Congress.

During oral arguments, some members of the court referenced the “major questions” doctrine — a legal principle holding that decisions with major economic or political impact typically require clear authorization from lawmakers.

The White House has argued that Trump’s tariffs are lawful under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a statute that allows presidents to regulate international commerce during declared national emergencies.

Administration officials have cited long-standing trade imbalances, along with concerns over illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking from Canada and Mexico, as threats severe enough to warrant emergency action.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling later this summer, a decision that could have lasting implications for U.S. trade policy and executive authority.

Trump has consistently said the tariffs are designed to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States, reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, and strengthen domestic production.

Some businesses have passed along a portion of the added costs to consumers, though the president has argued the broader economic benefits outweigh short-term adjustments.

Recent government data shows inflation has moderated compared to earlier in the year. Trump has pointed to those figures as evidence that tariffs have not caused sustained price increases, saying the policies have resulted in “no inflation.”

Federal Reserve officials have also suggested that any price impacts tied to tariffs may be temporary, particularly if no additional increases are implemented.

As the court deliberates, Trump continues to frame tariffs as a key tool for defending American workers, protecting economic independence, and securing long-term prosperity.
