Trump Team Calls Out Newsom

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., blasted California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Newsmax Wednesday after Newsom told a climate conference in Brazil that President Donald Trump’s proposal to open six new offshore oil leases near California was “dead on arrival.”

The comments immediately sparked backlash—especially from Americans frustrated with high gas prices, inflation, and California’s ongoing decline under far-left leadership.

Zeldin: Newsom Should Stop Touring Brazil and Fix the Mess at Home

During an appearance on “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Zeldin said Newsom should worry less about foreign climate events and more about fixing California’s soaring crime, homelessness, taxes, and mass population loss.

“Maybe instead of spending his time in Brazil, Gov. Newsom should come home and save California,” Zeldin said. “Americans are embarrassed by what the state has become, and countless Californians are leaving every day.”

Zeldin also highlighted the Trump administration’s success in rolling back Biden-era EPA mandates that punished traditional energy production and forced electric vehicle requirements onto Americans.

“This administration worked with Congress and Sen. Capito to overturn three Biden EPA waivers on tailpipe emissions—including the EV mandate. President Trump signed those protections into law,” he added.

Newsom Promises to Block Offshore Drilling—Even as Californians Pay Sky-High Gas Prices

Newsom made his remarks at the World Climate Action Summit in Belém, Brazil, where he vowed to block any drilling along California’s 840-mile coastline. He called traditional energy a “relic of the past,” despite the state’s extremely high fuel costs and rolling energy shortages.

A draft plan reviewed by The Washington Post shows that Trump officials are preparing to open California’s coast to six new offshore drilling lease sales between 2027 and 2030, marking the first major opportunity for energy expansion in decades.

Many conservatives see this plan as a key step toward lowering costs for American families and restoring U.S. energy independence.

Capito: Newsom’s Anti-Energy Agenda Drives Prices Higher and Hurts Working Families

Sen. Capito warned that Newsom’s climate extremism comes with real-world consequences—especially for middle- and lower-income Americans already struggling under inflation.

“We can be self-reliant on our own energy—oil, gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar. We’re going to need all of it,” Capito said. “Cutting off access only pushes California back toward $6-a-gallon gas.”

Capito emphasized that energy restrictions don’t just raise prices—they eliminate jobs and destroy opportunities in communities that rely on affordable, reliable energy.

“These policies cut jobs, hurt families, and stall economic growth,” she said. “Energy is the key to prosperity. We see that in West Virginia, and that’s what we stand for.”

BOTTOM LINE: Trump Prioritizes American Energy—Newsom Prioritizes Publicity Tours

As the debate over offshore drilling continues, the contrast is clear:

  • President Trump is pushing for lower energy prices, more domestic production, and true American independence.
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom is traveling the world while Californians pay the highest costs in the nation.

Many conservatives believe the choice couldn’t be more obvious.
