Trump Makes Letitia James Cry
New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) is fighting to throw out the federal fraud charges filed against her by the Trump administration, calling the case “politically motivated” and “unconstitutional.”
In a 50-page legal motion filed Friday, James’s lawyers accused federal prosecutors of targeting her because of President Trump’s “personal animus” toward her and her political statements.
They argue the charges amount to “vindictive prosecution” and violate her Fifth Amendment rights.
“The government targeted Attorney General James because of the President’s animus toward her lawful duties and campaign speech,” her filing claims.
🔹 The Backstory: A Long Political Feud
This latest filing traces back to James’s 2022 civil fraud case against President Trump and his businesses — a case conservatives saw as part of a coordinated political campaign to damage Trump financially and publicly.
That case ended with a New York judge ordering Trump to pay $354.8 million, which ballooned past $500 million with interest before an appeals court ultimately overturned the penalty earlier this year.
According to James’s attorneys, the fallout from that case sparked years of verbal and political attacks from Trump and his supporters, who accused her of weaponizing her office for political gain.
The filing references Trump’s colorful criticisms — calling James “a racist,” “a total disaster,” and “a monster” — as evidence that the current prosecution is payback.
🔹 James Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges
At her October 23 arraignment, Letitia James pleaded not guilty to charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.
Federal prosecutors claim she misrepresented her intent to live in a Virginia home as a secondary residence — allowing her to secure better mortgage terms and allegedly save nearly $19,000 — before renting the property out to another family.
Speaking defiantly at a campaign rally just before her court appearance, James vowed not to back down:
“I will not bow, I will not break, I will not bend,” she told supporters, calling the case “baseless” and “politically motivated.”
She accused the Department of Justice of “weaponizing justice for political gain” and said she stands on “solid rock” in her defense.
Her trial is scheduled for January 26.
🔹 Trump Responds: “I’m the One Who Was Targeted”
President Trump rejected accusations that the case against James is politically motivated.
“No, it’s the opposite,” Trump told 60 Minutes. “They went after me to stop me from running for president. I had to fight back.”
The President added that his administration is ensuring equal justice under the law, saying that those who used their offices to attack him “should be held accountable like everyone else.”
🔹 DOJ Sweep Targets Trump Critics
Letitia James isn’t the only well-known Trump opponent facing federal scrutiny.
- James Comey, former FBI Director, has pleaded not guilty to allegations that he lied under oath about leaks involving the Clinton and Russia investigations.
- John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, faces 18 counts for allegedly mishandling classified materials and keeping sensitive notes at his Maryland home after leaving the White House.
🔹 Conservative Takeaway
Letitia James once used her office to go after Donald Trump. Now she’s the one under indictment — a reversal many conservatives see as long overdue.
The case raises broader questions about political accountability, equal justice, and whether Democrats who once weaponized the law against Trump are now facing their own reckoning.
As the January trial looms, Americans are watching closely to see if the same legal system that targeted Trump will finally hold one of his fiercest political rivals to the same standard.
