This was surprising.
President Donald J. Trump made headlines across Asia this week after being caught on a hot mic revealing surprising details about his high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During a diplomatic dinner hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Trump — confident and composed — was overheard saying the Thursday meeting with Xi would last “three to four hours,” even though the White House officially scheduled less than two.
“We’re going to have something very satisfactory for both China and the United States,” Trump told world leaders. “It’s going to be a very good meeting. I look forward to it tomorrow morning.”
The 79-year-old president’s remarks instantly sparked speculation across global media — but Trump appeared calm, focused, and ready to lead.
Trump Shows Steady Leadership on the World Stage
Wrapping up a three-nation Asia tour, President Trump struck a confident tone — especially when asked about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
Trump smiled and remarked, “Your neighbor hasn’t exactly been the friendliest, but I believe that’s going to change. I know Kim Jong Un quite well, and I’m confident things will turn out positively.”
Earlier in the week, while speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump reflected on his prior dealings with Kim Jong Un, saying, “We had a very good relationship — mutual respect, really. I liked him, and he liked me.”
It was Trump who made historic headlines in 2019 as the first U.S. president ever to step foot on North Korean soil, a move that showcased bold diplomacy and courage under pressure.
Trade, Fentanyl, and National Security: Trump’s Priorities With China
Thursday’s meeting with Xi is expected to cover critical topics shaping America’s future — from trade and tariffs to China’s role in the fentanyl crisis and the global competition for rare-earth minerals essential to U.S. defense and technology.
Trump, speaking confidently aboard Air Force One, hinted that tariff relief could be on the table:
“I expect to be lowering tariffs on China because I believe they can help us with the fentanyl situation,” he said.
He emphasized America’s determination to end the deadly epidemic: “We have to get rid of it.”
Putting America First — Again
President Trump may also urge Xi to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to help bring an end to the devastating war in Ukraine.
Still, Trump made clear that some sensitive issues — like Taiwan — might not be discussed this round.
“I don’t know that we will even speak about Taiwan,” he said bluntly. “Taiwan is Taiwan.”
His message was simple yet powerful — America will engage with strength, not weakness.
As the world watches, Trump’s confident diplomacy continues to define his “America First” foreign policy, one rooted in respect, results, and restoring America’s global dominance.
