GOP Puts Vulnerable Democrats At Risk
WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Oversight Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) says Democrats in key swing districts are “starting to sweat bullets” as the federal government shutdown drags on — and he’s laying the blame squarely on the party’s far-left radicals who refuse to compromise.
Appearing Friday on The Record With Greta Van Susteren, Comer revealed that Democrats behind closed doors are panicking, fearing their voters are turning against them as the standoff stretches into another week.
“Democrats in competitive districts are panicking,” Comer said. “They’re begging Hakeem Jeffries and his crew to make a deal, but the far-left won’t let them.”
According to Comer, House Democrats had the chance to keep the government open but almost every one of them voted against the GOP’s commonsense funding plan.
“They had a clear opportunity to stop this shutdown,” he said. “But all except one Democrat voted no. They own this mess.”
Schumer and AOC’s Grip on the Party
Comer also called out Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), accusing him of bowing to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and the radical left rather than doing what’s best for working Americans.
“Schumer’s afraid of AOC,” Comer said bluntly. “He knows if he crosses her, she could primary him — and probably win. The entire Democratic Party is being held hostage by its far-left fringe.”
Hypocrisy in Full View
The Kentucky Republican pointed out that Democrats are now doing exactly what they used to accuse Republicans of — playing politics with federal paychecks and welfare programs.
“They used to scream that Republicans were heartless during shutdowns,” Comer said. “Now they’re the ones stopping paychecks for federal workers and holding up benefits for families. It’s total hypocrisy.”
Runaway Spending and Failed Leadership
Comer blasted Democrats for their addiction to spending, saying their demands have reached new extremes.
“Two or three trillion-dollar deficits aren’t enough anymore,” he said. “They want four or five trillion. It’s reckless and unsustainable.”
He added that a few moderate Democrats — including Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and two nervous Georgia Democrats — have voted to reopen the government but haven’t made a dent in their party’s gridlock.
“You’ve got a few trying to do the right thing, but it’s still not enough,” Comer warned. “At this rate, the shutdown could last another week or two.”
Bottom Line
Comer says what’s really holding up the government isn’t the GOP — it’s Democrats too loyal to their radical base and too afraid of losing power to the far-left activists who run their party.
“We’re trying to pay the troops, protect federal workers, and keep welfare programs going,” Comer said. “But Democrats want to keep Washington shut down until they get more money. It’s disgraceful.”
