A shocking Democrat scandal has erupted in Virginia — and even President Trump is calling it “sick and demented.”

Virginia’s Democratic candidate for Attorney General, Jay Jones, is under fire after explosive text messages surfaced showing him fantasizing about the assassination of a Republican leader. The vile messages, sent in 2022, are now shaking the state’s political landscape — and the reaction from top Democrats is sparking national outrage.

Trump: “Democrats Are Protecting a Lunatic”

President Donald Trump blasted Democrats over the weekend for refusing to condemn Jones or demand his resignation. Trump said the messages were beyond disturbing and accused Virginia’s Democratic leadership — including gubernatorial frontrunner Abigail Spanberger — of turning a blind eye to “pure evil.”

“The Radical Left Lunatic, Jay Jones, made SICK and DEMENTED jokes about murdering a Republican Legislator and his family,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Even Democrats are saying it’s resignation territory — and yet Spanberger stays silent. Jay Jones should drop out IMMEDIATELY.”

The messages reportedly referenced then–House Speaker Todd Gilbert, his wife, and their children — language that investigators have called “grotesque” and “violent.”

Chilling Details From the Leaked Texts

According to reports, Jones texted Republican Delegate Carrie Coyner in August 2022 with horrifying statements.

One message read:

“He wrote that only two bullets were needed for three men — Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot.”

He then added:

“Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.”

In later texts, Jones fantasized about Gilbert’s wife witnessing her children’s deaths, calling the kids “little fascists.” Coyner pushed back, begging him to stop, replying:

“It upsets me when you make comments about harming others or hoping they die.”

The revelations were first reported by National Review and later confirmed by The New York Post.

Democrats Stand By Their Man

Despite national outrage, Virginia Democrats have refused to distance themselves from Jones.

The Virginia Beach Democratic Party continues to support him, and Abigail Spanberger — currently leading in polls for governor — has only condemned the “tone” of his messages without demanding he quit the race.

“I told Jay he must take full responsibility,” Spanberger said in a statement. “I will always condemn violent language in politics.”

But critics argue her response is weak and politically calculated — a way to avoid alienating the progressive left while appearing “concerned.”

A Pattern of Silence and Double Standards

Conservatives say this is just another example of the Democrats’ double standard — outrage when Republicans make jokes, but silence when their own side calls for violence.
Trump’s supporters note that if a Republican had written anything close to Jones’s texts, the media would have demanded resignation within hours.

“Imagine if one of Trump’s allies said this,” wrote one commentator on X (formerly Twitter). “It would be front-page news for weeks. But because it’s a Democrat, they call it a ‘mistake.’”

Virginia Race Heats Up

Despite the scandal, Spanberger currently leads Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears by about eight points, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average.

However, conservative analysts say the leak could change the momentum — especially as older voters react to what many see as moral decay within the Democratic Party.

Political strategist Greg Whitman told The Post:

“This isn’t just bad judgment — it’s a glimpse into the radical mindset infecting the Democratic base.”

The Bottom Line

The Democrat text leak has become one of the most explosive stories in Virginia politics — and President Trump is right in the middle of it.

With the 2026 midterms on the horizon, Republicans are seizing the moment to remind voters what’s at stake: decency, law and order, and leadership that actually puts America first.
