Trump Admin Comes To His Defense
Washington, D.C. – Secretary of State Marco Rubio unleashed a fiery defense of President Donald Trump on Sunday, blasting claims that European leaders are worried Trump will pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into signing a weak peace agreement.
Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation, Rubio dismissed the suggestion as a “stupid media narrative” fueled by left-wing spin.
Rubio: Trump Isn’t Bullying Ukraine
When host Margaret Brennan claimed European leaders were flying in as “backup” for Zelensky, Rubio shot back:
“That’s simply false. These leaders aren’t coming to shield Zelensky from pressure. They’re arriving because we’ve been coordinating with them for weeks, and President Trump personally invited them.”
Rubio stressed that President Trump has held far more meetings with Zelensky and European allies than with Vladimir Putin, proving the administration’s commitment to Ukraine’s independence and long-term peace.
Media Pushes “Bullying” Myth
The mainstream press continues to recycle claims that Trump is too tough on Zelensky, even pointing to a heated White House exchange months ago involving Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and the Ukrainian president.
But Rubio wasn’t having it:
“This is such a stupid media narrative. We’ve been coordinating with European leaders for weeks. They chose to come here. They weren’t forced. This is about building peace — not some fantasy about Trump bullying Ukraine.”
Trump’s Russia Strategy: Real Peace, Not Theater
Critics also accused Trump of being too soft on Putin at last week’s Alaska summit. Brennan pressed Rubio on why Trump didn’t immediately impose new sanctions. Rubio explained that Trump is pursuing results, not political theater:
“Our goal isn’t to stage a dramatic walkout for TV cameras. Our goal is a real peace agreement to end this war. If sanctions are imposed too early, talks collapse, and you lock in another year of war, death, and destruction.”
Rubio said enough progress was made in the meeting to warrant another round of negotiations.
Peace Talks Continue Monday
On Monday, Trump will host Zelensky and European leaders at the White House for follow-up talks. Rubio said that while a final peace deal isn’t imminent, the continued engagement shows momentum is building.
“At the end of the day, if peace isn’t possible, President Trump has the option to impose new sanctions,” Rubio said. “But our mission is to end this war, allow Ukraine to rebuild, and make sure it never happens again.”
