Abbott Issues Warning To California
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott isn’t holding back — warning that if California Democrats move ahead with their controversial redistricting plan to protect liberal power, the Lone Star State could eliminate up to 10 Democrat-held districts.
Speaking Monday, Abbott reminded Americans that blue states have been gerrymandering for decades to lock in one-party control.
“Look at Illinois. Look at California, New York, Massachusetts — they’ve been gerrymandering for years,” Abbott said. “They’ve already taken it as far as they can. But if California tries to play games, Texas can take out ten Democrat seats — easy.”
Right now, Texas has 25 Republican members of Congress and 12 Democrats, with one seat vacant after the passing of Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-TX). GOP leaders have already identified five strong pickup opportunities for the next election cycle with their proposed new congressional map.
But Texas Democrats are desperate to stop it — even fleeing the state to block a quorum and stall the redistricting vote.
Meanwhile, the battle for control of Congress is heating up nationwide. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has called a special session in November to pass a new congressional map designed to erase Republican gains in Texas. New York and Illinois are exploring similar moves, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) says he’s ready to revisit his state’s maps. Missouri and Indiana could also take action.
With the 2026 elections approaching, both parties are digging in for a high-stakes redistricting war that could determine who controls Congress for years to come.
Bottom Line: Abbott’s warning is clear — if Democrats want a fight, Texas is ready to deliver a knockout blow.
