Is McConnell trying to sink the GOP?
Establishment Senator Sides with Democrats to Block Key Conservative Reforms
Washington, D.C. — In a move that has stunned conservatives across the country, longtime Senate insider Mitch McConnell appears to be quietly undermining President Trump’s bold America First agenda — just months after Trump’s historic victory over Kamala Harris.
Although McConnell stepped down as Senate Republican Leader after nearly two decades, he’s still flexing his influence behind the scenes — and not in a good way. Instead of supporting Trump’s push to cut billions in reckless government spending, McConnell joined left-leaning Republicans and Democrats to block a critical $9 billion rescissions bill designed to slash wasteful programs.
This legislation was a top priority for President Trump and former OMB Director Russell Vought — a major step toward restoring fiscal sanity in Washington. But McConnell, without warning, voted against two key procedural motions, effectively stalling Trump’s conservative spending rollback.
A Pattern of Sabotage from the GOP Old Guard
This isn’t McConnell’s first deviation from the America First agenda. He also sided with Democrats to water down the package by exempting nearly $500 million in international aid — putting foreign interests ahead of American taxpayers.
Even more confusing, McConnell then voted for the final bill after trying to block it, calling the move a “compromise.” To many in the GOP base, it looks more like a political stunt than principle.
“My belief in soft power isn’t in conflict with accountability,” McConnell claimed — but many aren’t buying it.
As one Republican senator told reporters, “Mitch is no longer bound by leadership, and now he’s just voting how he wants — even if it means helping Democrats and hurting Trump.”
Breaking Ranks: McConnell’s War with Trump Continues
McConnell has consistently clashed with Trump’s agenda — from voting to preserve harmful tariffs, to opposing conservative nominees like Pete Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard, and RFK Jr. for top Cabinet positions.
His critics say he’s working to protect the D.C. establishment, not advance the will of conservative voters.
He’s even gone so far as to tell his biographer that the MAGA movement is “completely wrong” and that Ronald Reagan “wouldn’t recognize” today’s Republican Party — a clear slap at Trump voters who helped reshape the GOP into a party that puts America First.
Tensions Rising with New GOP Leadership
Some senators believe McConnell’s latest moves are more than just policy disagreements — they may be part of a deeper rift with new Senate Republican Leader John Thune, who replaced McConnell earlier this year.
“Thune sidelined him, and McConnell hasn’t forgotten it,” one lawmaker said. “Now he’s making moves that hurt the team.”
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) called McConnell’s obstruction “disappointing,” noting that McConnell himself demanded loyalty for years when he led the Senate. “Now he won’t return the favor,” Cramer added.
Conservative Voters Deserve Better
At a time when President Trump is working overtime to drain the swamp, slash wasteful spending, and restore American strength, McConnell’s actions raise serious questions:
- Why is a senior Republican voting with Democrats to derail key conservative bills?
- Why is McConnell siding with globalist priorities over the will of the American people?
These aren’t just votes. These are signals to the entire GOP base about where certain politicians stand — and whose side they’re really on.
McConnell may no longer hold the title of leader, but he’s using his status to protect the failed status quo that voters rejected years ago.
