Foreign Leader Attacks Trump And Vance
Ex-German leader revives anti-Trump rhetoric while praising EU globalism—White House fires back with powerful America First defense.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel launched a fresh attack on President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance this week, accusing the administration of threatening democracy and calling on European leaders to “stand united” against the U.S. over trade.
While promoting her memoir in Athens, Merkel criticized President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, which are set to hit the European Union on July 9 unless a new deal is struck. She urged Brussels to respond aggressively, saying, “We must not allow America to impose its will. Europe should retaliate with tariffs of our own.”
Merkel’s remarks come as President Trump continues to push his America First trade policy, prioritizing American jobs and industries over foreign appeasement. The tariffs, which target EU products benefiting from unfair trade loopholes, are a cornerstone of Trump’s economic agenda.
In a swipe at Vice President J.D. Vance, Merkel claimed his interpretation of “freedom” is dangerous. “When the U.S. says it will only support partners who align with its concept of freedom—meaning no rules or controls—that poses a real threat to democracy,” she said.
Merkel also revisited her tense 2017 meeting with Trump, alleging he refused to shake her hand in front of cameras. “He wanted attention,” she said. “That’s what he thrives on.”
The former German leader went further, suggesting Trump admired authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. She told CNN in a past interview that Trump seemed “fascinated” by their raw power.
Her comments echo the globalist frustrations of elites who spent decades benefiting from lopsided trade deals at the expense of the American middle class.
The White House wasted no time responding. Spokesman Kush Desai issued a blunt statement:
“Countries and foreign leaders who have gotten used to taking advantage of the United States need to come to terms with the fact that President Donald J. Trump was resoundingly re-elected to put America First. He is delivering on that promise.”
With Trump’s tariff deadline approaching and Europe scrambling for concessions, the message from Washington is clear: the days of America getting the short end of the stick are over.
