“China is studying the West’s response,” Sherman told NewsNation. “They want to know if anyone will actually stand up to them.”

Trump Administration Sounded Alarm on Taiwan Threat

Last month, the Trump administration issued a direct warning to Beijing after China carried out surprise military exercises in the waters and airspace surrounding Taiwan. The aggressive move, without prior notice, raised alarms throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

While China insists Taiwan belongs to them, the truth is that Taiwan is a free, independently governed democracy—and a vital partner of the United States. Taiwan is also the backbone of the global semiconductor supply chain, which powers everything from smartphones to military defense systems.

“Just like Putin claims Ukraine, China thinks it can take Taiwan and its semiconductors without consequence,” Sherman warned. “That’s a major threat to our national security.”
