Trump made a bold move and many are very surprised.
In a bold move to protect American taxpayers and restore media balance, President Donald Trump signed an executive order late Thursday to cut federal funding for PBS and NPR—two outlets his administration says have become megaphones for left-wing ideology.
Trump Cracks Down on Public Media Funding
The executive order comes amid growing criticism that taxpayer dollars are being funneled into platforms pushing partisan and “woke” narratives. The Trump administration is now asking Congress to revoke $1.1 billion in future funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the parent entity that helps sustain over 1,500 public radio and television stations across the U.S.
White House officials have labeled NPR and PBS as “Marxist,” “biased,” and “ideologically extreme,” pointing to what they say is an unmistakable liberal slant in their programming and hiring practices.
CPB Pushes Back – But Admits Liberal Tilt
CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison responded with a public statement insisting that only Congress, not the president, has authority over CPB’s funding. “CPB is a private nonprofit, not a federal agency,” she said, emphasizing its legislative roots.
CPB was established in 1967 with a clear congressional mandate to operate independently from federal government control. Harrison cited a federal statute stating that no U.S. agency or official may interfere with CPB operations or programming—a clause many believe has shielded it from needed accountability.
NPR’s Political Imbalance Raises Eyebrows
Even CPB’s defenders are struggling to ignore the mounting evidence of bias. NPR CEO Katherine Maher testified before Congress in March, admitting it was a “concern” that the outlet’s editorial staff included 87 Democrats and zero Republicans. She also conceded that NPR mishandled the Hunter Biden laptop story during the 2020 election, failing to investigate or report it promptly.
Such revelations have only fueled conservative frustration that public media outlets are more interested in pushing political narratives than informing the American people.
Taxpayer Money Under Scrutiny
NPR receives less than 1% of its budget from federal grants, while roughly 16% of PBS’s funding comes from government sources. But critics argue that even a single tax dollar going toward ideologically slanted content is too much.
President Trump’s actions reflect a larger movement to defund biased institutions and hold publicly funded entities to higher standards of neutrality and fairness. His administration also attempted to halt funding for Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, and other government-supported media outlets earlier this year—a move blocked by a federal judge in April.
