Democrats need to back off.
Massapequa, NY – Long Islanders are fighting back against the radical woke agenda—and now, President Donald J. Trump is joining the fight.
At the center of the controversy is Massapequa High School’s iconic mascot: the “Chiefs.” For decades, the name has been a proud symbol of school spirit, leadership, and local tradition. But thanks to a controversial New York State mandate, schools must remove any team names or logos referencing Native American culture by year’s end.
The Massapequa School District sued to stop the mandate, but a federal judge sided with the state. Now, parents, students, and community leaders say the state is erasing their identity—and they’re turning to Trump for help.
Trump Blasts the Decision: “An Affront to Our Great Indian Population”
President Trump took to Truth Social, calling the push to force a name change “ridiculous,” and a slap in the face to both Massapequa families and Native American history.
“I agree with the people in Massapequa… Forcing them to change the name is an affront to our great Indian population. The School Board and virtually everyone in the area are demanding the name be kept,” Trump said.
“I don’t see the Kansas City Chiefs changing their name anytime soon!”
Trump also announced that he’s tasked Secretary of Education Linda McMahon with getting involved in the case, signaling that the fight to protect school identity has officially gone national.
Local Leaders, Parents Stand Strong Against “Woke Overreach”
School Board President Kerry Wachter voiced the concerns of many parents and students:
“This is more than a name. It’s who our kids are. They are Chiefs,” she told the New York Post.
“This decision has nothing to do with helping children—and everything to do with pushing a woke agenda.”
The district has issued an emergency appeal to the U.S. Department of Education, asking for federal support.
Nassau County Exec Slams Hochul’s Agenda
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman didn’t mince words on Fox & Friends, taking direct aim at Gov. Kathy Hochul:
“When I hear the word ‘Chief,’ I think of leadership and courage—not racism,” Blakeman said. “We honor Native American heritage here—we don’t erase it.”
Massive Cost, Zero Benefit
The district warns that complying with the state mandate would cost taxpayers roughly $1 million—all to replace signs, uniforms, gym floors, and other materials. Even more troubling, they say, is the emotional cost to students who have worn the “Chiefs” name with pride for generations.
The lawsuit also claims the ban violates First Amendment rights, prohibiting school officials from even wearing “Chiefs” merchandise on school grounds or at public events.
Trump’s Support Signals Momentum Shift
While other institutions caved—like the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) and the Cleveland Guardians (formerly Indians)—schools and teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Florida State Seminoles, and Atlanta Braves have stood firm.
Now with President Trump in their corner, Massapequa families are hopeful that their voices will finally be heard.
This isn’t just about a mascot. It’s about standing up to bureaucratic overreach, defending freedom of expression, and protecting the heritage of American communities.
