Top Democrat Hospitalized
Rep. Donald Norcross (D-NJ), age 66, has been hospitalized following a serious medical emergency that doctors say could lead to an extended recovery and potential physical rehabilitation.
Severe Gallbladder Infection Leads to Sepsis
According to a statement from Norcross’s office, the longtime New Jersey Democrat was traveling on April 7 when he suffered what’s being described as an “emergency medical event” tied to his gallbladder. He was first treated at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, before being flown back to Cooper University Health Care in Camden, NJ.
Doctors there diagnosed Norcross with cholangitis, a gallbladder infection that had progressed to sepsis—a life-threatening condition often associated with organ failure.
“Congressman Norcross is responding well to treatment,” said Dr. Eric Kupersmith, Cooper’s Chief Physician Executive. “But he faces a long recovery and may require physical rehabilitation.”
Norcross Remains in ICU—Stable But Not Yet Cleared to Return Home
Medical professionals successfully removed a gallstone, stabilizing the congressman’s condition. However, the 66-year-old lawmaker remains under intensive care and won’t be cleared to travel until his health improves.
A statement from his office praised the efforts of both hospitals, adding that the congressman is “in good spirits” and grateful for the “exceptional medical care” he’s receiving.
“When Congressman Norcross is cleared to fly, he will return to New Jersey to complete his recovery,” the statement noted.

For some, this serves as a reminder of the importance of electing strong, capable leaders who can handle the physical demands of the job.
