Second Lady Reveals Her Top Priority
Usha Vance, wife of Vice President J.D. Vance, opens up about motherhood, marriage, and staying grounded in a world full of politics and pressure.
In her first wide-ranging interview since becoming Second Lady, Usha Vance is revealing what life is really like behind the scenes—and how she’s working to keep her family rooted in faith, tradition, and normalcy during uncertain times.
“My top priority right now is just to be a normal person,” Vance told The Free Press.
That’s not easy when your husband is serving alongside President Donald J. Trump and you’re suddenly thrust into the public eye. But Vance, 39, says she’s doing her best to stay true to her values.
Life Inside the Second Family: “It’s Not Normal—And That’s Okay”
Usha Vance, a seasoned trial lawyer and devoted mother of three, admitted that her life has changed dramatically since the 2024 election.
“It feels almost absurd to call it normal,” she said with a laugh. “There are so many people who come up with wild stories about who we are, what we believe, and how we plan everything. The truth is a lot simpler.”
She described life in politics as “lonely” and “isolating” at times—especially for families raising young children. But having a strong marriage and faith-centered family life, she says, makes all the difference.
Breaking Stereotypes: An American Story Rooted in Faith and Family
As the first Indian American and Hindu woman to hold the title of Second Lady, Vance offers a refreshing perspective in a town dominated by image and ego.
“It’s funny—people expect me to fit a certain look. But I’m not blonde, and I don’t wear nine-inch heels,” she said with a smile. “That wouldn’t suit me at all.”
Despite not coming from a wealthy or fashion-focused background, Vance says the response from conservative Americans has been overwhelmingly kind.
“People don’t really care about my appearance,” she said. “They care about character, family, and what kind of values you stand for.”
A Relatable Role Model for American Women
In an age of political division, Usha Vance stands out not just as the Second Lady—but as a wife, mother, and professional woman who puts faith, family, and humility above the Washington spotlight.
Her honesty and quiet strength are resonating with everyday Americans—especially older voters who appreciate traditional values, grace under pressure, and authenticity over glamor.
