Here’s what happened.
A new poll shows Americans are divided over President Trump’s economic policies — but many still say it’s Joe Biden’s failed agenda that sparked today’s inflation crisis.
As the Trump administration cracks down on unfair foreign trade through sweeping new tariffs and import reforms, public opinion is shifting. According to a CBS News survey, 52% of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the economy, while 49% say they approve.
Inflation Still a Major Concern for Older Americans
When it comes to inflation — one of the top concerns for families, retirees, and working Americans — 56% said they disapprove of the administration’s handling of rising prices. Still, 44% voiced approval, suggesting many support Trump’s effort to rein in global price manipulation and fix broken Biden-era policies.
Despite the criticism, many voters over 50 are demanding action, not politics. And they haven’t forgotten who got us here.
Biden’s Economic Damage Still Haunts the Nation
When asked who deserves more blame for today’s high inflation, 38% pointed directly to Joe Biden’s policies, compared to 34% who named Trump. Another 19% held both administrations equally responsible, while just 9% refused to assign blame.
This reflects a lasting frustration with Biden-era spending, energy restrictions, and open-border policies — all of which fueled runaway inflation and hurt the American middle class.
Trump’s Tariff Strategy: “America First” in Action
President Trump recently announced a 25% tariff on all foreign-made car imports, part of a larger effort to bring back American jobs and manufacturing. On Wednesday, the President is expected to unveil reciprocal tariffs targeting countries that have long taken advantage of U.S. trade policies.
However, public sentiment on tariffs remains mixed. The poll found that:
- 55% believe Trump is focusing too much on tariffs,
- 38% say he’s focused the right amount,
- Just 7% think he isn’t doing enough.
Still, in an age of global instability, many Americans recognize that tough trade stances protect American industries and workers — especially those in manufacturing-heavy states.
Voters Want Lower Prices and Border Security
When asked what the President should focus on next, 64% said lowering prices should be the top priority. Only 31% said he’s focused the right amount on inflation, while 5% said he’s focused too much.
At the same time, President Trump’s immigration policies are earning widespread praise. The poll found:
- 56% approve of the administration’s immigration stance,
- 44% disapprove.
With border security, deportation of criminal aliens, and the return of Remain in Mexico policies, many older voters believe the Trump administration is restoring law and order at the southern border.
BOTTOM LINE:
Even with some skepticism over tariffs, millions of Americans—especially older voters—still trust President Trump to fix what Joe Biden broke. From border security to economic fairness, it’s clear that Trump’s “America First” agenda is resonating with those who’ve lived through decades of globalist trade deals and rising costs.
