This remark stands in stark contrast to the White House’s recent position, which designated Amy Gleason as the acting administrator of DOGE, amid mounting legal challenges.
The White House has been attempting to distance Musk from DOGE after the department became embroiled in lawsuits. These legal battles argue that Musk, as a private citizen and unelected official, overstepped his bounds by making unilateral decisions, such as shutting down congressionally-created agencies and attempting to eliminate thousands of federal jobs. At a recent court hearing, U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang expressed frustration with the government’s inability to provide clear answers about the chain of command at DOGE, casting doubt on the administration’s narrative. His pointed questions revealed a growing sense of suspicion regarding the lack of transparency surrounding Musk’s involvement. Critics, including conservative figures, have seized on these inconsistencies, arguing that the administration’s stance on Musk’s position is contradictory and undermines its credibility.
As DOGE continues to face legal and political challenges, the controversy over Musk’s role within the agency seems far from settled. The department’s controversial workforce cuts, such as the IRS’s planned reduction of nearly 50% of its staff, add to the growing sense of unease, particularly among Democrats and civil service advocates.
