This needed to happen sooner but it’s great nonetheless!

President Donald Trump has taken a bold step to reinforce the cultural unity of America by signing an executive order to establish English as the official language of the United States. This decisive move revokes a 2000 executive order by former President Bill Clinton, which required federal agencies to offer language assistance to those with limited English proficiency. While Trump’s order nullifies Clinton’s mandate, it does not force any immediate changes in the services federal agencies provide. Instead, it leaves the decision to individual agency heads to determine if adjustments are necessary.

Although English has long been the language of governance and national identity, the U.S. has never formally designated it as the official language. This new executive order aims to bring the U.S. in line with the majority of nations worldwide. In fact, nearly 180 out of 195 countries around the globe have made this distinction. Trump emphasized that establishing a national language is essential for a unified and cohesive society, noting that a shared language fosters stronger communication and greater collaboration among citizens.

For years, Trump has advocated for English as the country’s official language, especially in the context of immigration policies. In a 2024 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), he expressed frustration over the growing number of languages entering the U.S., stating, “We have languages coming into our country that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing.”

The president’s executive order stresses that adopting English as the official language will promote national unity, ensuring consistency in government operations and providing a clear path for all citizens to engage in the civic process. Trump has continued to push for policies that prioritize American values, including in his ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s cultural and political fabric.

Since returning to the Oval Office in January, President Trump has signed over 70 executive orders, reinforcing his commitment to American exceptionalism and the principles that make the U.S. a unique and enduring force in the world.
