Is Europe out of their minds?
Norway has reaffirmed its commitment to supplying fuel to U.S. Navy ships, despite recent threats from a private marine fuel supplier to cut off services due to tensions in U.S.-Ukraine relations. The controversy began after a fuel company, Haltbakk Bunkers, publicly criticized the U.S. for its handling of the relationship with Ukraine, following a heated exchange between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In response to growing concerns about the future of U.S. Navy refueling operations in Norway, Defense Minister Tore Sandvik issued a statement, emphasizing that the Norwegian government remains steadfast in its support for U.S. military needs. “We’ve seen statements raising worries about support for U.S. Navy vessels in Norway. This is not in agreement with Norway’s policy,” Sandvik said.
The issue surfaced after Haltbakk Bunkers CEO, Gunnar Gran, posted on social media that the company would no longer provide fuel to American forces, citing the tension between Trump and Zelenskyy during an Oval Office meeting. In the post, Gran described the situation as a “backstabbing TV show” and stated that he could no longer support the U.S. military. However, it was clarified that this decision would have little impact, as Haltbakk Bunkers did not hold a formal contract with the U.S. government.
The dispute arose in the context of a tense exchange in the Oval Office, where Vice President JD Vance confronted Zelenskyy about his behavior and criticized Ukraine’s handling of conscripts. Trump also disagreed with Zelenskyy’s comments about the future impact of the war on the U.S., leading to heightened concerns about the direction of U.S.-Ukraine relations.
Despite the isolated actions of a private company, Norway, a steadfast NATO ally, reassured both the U.S. and its military that fuel supplies would continue without interruption. “American forces will continue to receive the supply and support they require from Norway,” Sandvik concluded, reinforcing the strong ties between the two nations.
