Here’s what happened.
Security was dramatically increased at the U.S. Capitol on Monday after police arrested an armed man who drove to a security barricade outside the Capitol complex, triggering an active law enforcement investigation and the temporary closure of part of the Capitol grounds.
U.S. Capitol Police said officers stopped the suspect at the North Barricade and discovered he was carrying a firearm. Because weapons are strictly prohibited on Capitol grounds, officers immediately secured the area while investigators worked to determine why the man had driven to one of the nation’s most heavily protected government buildings.
The incident prompted an increased security presence around the Capitol, where President Donald Trump and members of Congress receive extensive protection.
Armed Suspect Arrested At Capitol Security Checkpoint
According to Capitol Police, officers arrested the man shortly after he arrived at the North Barricade.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol,” Capitol Police said in an official statement.
Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, and officials had not announced criminal charges as of Monday afternoon. Investigators also have not said whether the man intended to enter the Capitol or whether he posed a specific threat to President Trump, lawmakers, or Capitol staff.
Investigation Continues After Vehicle Searched
Police remained at the scene for several hours as investigators carefully examined the suspect’s Ford Bronco, which had been stopped diagonally near the security barricade.
Officers were seen removing several items from inside the SUV, including multiple water bottles and other personal belongings that investigators collected as potential evidence.
Video obtained by Fox News showed the Ford Bronco, which displayed Florida license plates, being towed from the Capitol after investigators completed much of their on-scene work.
Authorities are continuing to examine the vehicle as they work to determine why the suspect traveled to the Capitol while allegedly carrying a firearm.
Dog Safely Removed From Vehicle
Officials also confirmed that a dog inside the SUV was safely removed without injury.
The animal was transported from the scene in an SPCA vehicle while investigators continued processing evidence at the Capitol complex.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Capitol Security Remained Tight
The North Barricade remained closed for an extended period Monday as Capitol Police continued their investigation.
Law enforcement has not released additional information about the suspect’s motives, and officials have not indicated whether the incident was connected to any broader threat.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are expected to provide additional details as more information becomes available.
For now, Capitol Police say their focus remains on determining exactly why the armed man drove to the Capitol and whether any additional public safety concerns exist.
