Sanders Makes Controversial Endorsement
Sen. Bernie Sanders is backing Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon following her surprising primary victory, adding another prominent progressive endorsement to a race Republicans are favored to win.
Sanders, the Vermont independent and longtime leader of the progressive movement, announced his support for Nixon after she defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary.
The endorsement puts a national spotlight on Nixon’s campaign and could sharpen the political contrast between Democrats and Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Nixon supports several major progressive priorities, including Medicare for All, expanded childcare programs, paid family leave and medical debt cancellation.
She also recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America.
For Florida voters, the general election will now present a clear choice between Nixon’s progressive platform and Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, who enters the contest with a substantial fundraising advantage.
Bernie Sanders Endorses Angie Nixon
Sanders portrayed Nixon’s primary victory as evidence that Democratic voters are looking for candidates willing to challenge the party’s political establishment and pursue a more aggressive economic agenda.
“Angie’s campaign is proof that Democratic voters are looking for candidates who will fight for them and who will take on the greed of the billionaire class,” Sanders said in announcing his endorsement.
Sanders also argued that Nixon represents the future direction of the Democratic Party.
“This is the future of the Democratic Party,” he said.
The Vermont senator challenged the idea that Florida should automatically be considered a Republican state, arguing that economic concerns can attract working-class voters regardless of geography or party affiliation.
Sanders said Americans across red and blue states are frustrated with what he described as “status quo politics” and are looking for substantial political change.
His endorsement further connects Nixon to the progressive movement that Sanders helped bring into the national spotlight during his presidential campaigns.
Nixon Supports Medicare for All and Other Progressive Policies
Nixon previously worked on Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign and has embraced many of the economic policies that have defined his political career.
Among the issues Sanders highlighted were medical debt cancellation, expanded childcare and guaranteed paid family leave.
He also praised Nixon for supporting the principle that healthcare should be considered a right and for advocating higher taxes on billionaires.
Nixon welcomed Sanders’ endorsement and emphasized their shared political philosophy.
She said she believes government should serve working Americans rather than wealthy individuals and corporations.
Her agenda includes Medicare for All, affordable childcare, lower housing costs and policies designed to improve economic security for working families.
Those proposals are likely to become major points of debate during the Florida Senate campaign, particularly as Republicans focus on taxes, government spending, healthcare and the size of the federal government.
Angie Nixon Defeats Alex Vindman in Major Upset
Nixon reached the general election after scoring an unexpected victory over Vindman.
The Florida state representative defeated him by approximately 12 percentage points despite facing a massive fundraising disadvantage.
Vindman raised about $16 million during the campaign, compared with roughly $1 million raised by Nixon.
The outcome was particularly notable because Vindman had considerably greater national name recognition.
Vindman became a prominent figure in national politics after testifying during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment proceedings.
Despite his fundraising advantage and national profile, Democratic primary voters ultimately chose Nixon.
Her victory demonstrates that campaign spending alone does not guarantee electoral success, particularly in primary elections where enthusiasm among a party’s most committed voters can play an important role.
Nixon’s Democratic Socialists of America Ties Could Become Campaign Issue
Nixon’s recent decision to join the Democratic Socialists of America could become one of the most closely examined issues of the general-election campaign.
Republicans are likely to use that affiliation, along with Nixon’s support for Medicare for All and other progressive policies, to argue that Florida Democrats have nominated a candidate significantly to the left of the state’s electorate.
Nixon and her supporters, however, are expected to argue that policies involving healthcare costs, childcare, housing and wages address financial pressures facing ordinary families.
That disagreement creates a fundamental debate over the proper role of government in the economy.
For conservative and older voters concerned about taxes, federal spending, healthcare and retirement security, the details of Nixon’s economic agenda could become especially important as the campaign develops.
Ashley Moody Responds to Nixon Victory
Republican Sen. Ashley Moody wasted little time attacking her new Democratic opponent.
Moody accused Nixon of “trying to light this country on fire from the inside,” signaling that Republicans intend to make Nixon’s ideology a central issue in the campaign.
Moody also begins the general election with a considerable financial advantage.
The Republican senator has raised approximately $14 million, giving her substantially more campaign resources than Nixon currently possesses.
Fundraising is only one factor in statewide elections, but the financial disparity could prove important as both campaigns compete for television advertising, digital outreach and voter turnout.
Progressive Democrats Rally Behind Nixon
Sanders is not the only nationally prominent progressive supporting Nixon.
Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts have also endorsed her campaign.
Together, those endorsements firmly associate Nixon with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
That could help Nixon raise money and generate enthusiasm among progressive voters nationwide.
At the same time, Republicans may use those endorsements to reinforce their argument that Nixon represents policies that are too liberal for Florida.
The competing strategies could make the race a broader referendum on whether the progressive movement can expand its appeal in states that have moved toward Republicans in recent elections.
Can Democrats Turn Florida Blue Again?
Sanders insists Florida should not simply be written off as a Republican state.
Recent election results, however, show Democrats face a difficult political environment there.
Florida was once considered one of America’s premier presidential battlegrounds, with Republicans and Democrats regularly competing for the state’s electoral votes.
The state’s political landscape has shifted considerably in recent years, with Republicans achieving major statewide victories and expanding their advantage among Florida voters.
That history makes Nixon’s campaign an important test for Democrats.
Can a candidate campaigning openly on Medicare for All and other progressive economic policies win enough independents and moderate voters to compete statewide?
Or will those positions strengthen Republican support and reinforce Florida’s movement toward the GOP?
Cook Political Report Rates Race Solid Republican
For now, independent election analysts see Republicans as clear favorites.
The Cook Political Report rates the Florida Senate race Solid Republican, underscoring the challenge Nixon faces against Moody.
Political ratings can change as campaigns develop, but the current assessment suggests Democrats would need to overcome significant structural and political disadvantages to capture the seat.
Nixon’s upset primary victory nevertheless gives Democrats a nominee who has already demonstrated an ability to overcome long odds.
The general election will be a much larger test.
Why the Florida Senate Race Matters in 2026
Florida’s Senate contest could have implications beyond one congressional seat.
Republicans will likely portray the election as a choice between conservative governance and an expanding progressive agenda involving healthcare, taxation and government spending.
Nixon and her supporters are likely to focus on affordability, wages, healthcare costs, childcare and housing.
Those issues could resonate with voters concerned about the cost of living and their family’s financial security.
But Nixon’s association with Sanders, the Democratic Socialists of America and some of Congress’ best-known progressives gives Republicans a clear ideological contrast to emphasize.
For voters over 50, issues involving healthcare, taxes, inflation, retirement savings, government spending and the broader economy could be especially significant when evaluating the candidates.
With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, the Florida Senate race will provide an important measure of whether progressive Democrats can gain ground in a state that has increasingly favored Republicans — or whether the GOP can further cement its advantage in one of America’s largest and most politically important states.
