Another Republican Considering 2028 Run

Rep. Don Bacon is opening the door to a possible run for president in 2028, signaling that his decision to leave Congress may not mark the end of his career in national politics.

The Nebraska Republican, who is preparing to depart the House after his current term, says he would welcome the opportunity to seek the presidency. At the same time, Bacon has indicated that he would also consider joining another Republican candidate who shares his political principles.

His comments add another name to the growing conversation surrounding the future of the Republican Party and the 2028 presidential election.

Bacon Says He Would Welcome a Presidential Run

During an appearance on the “Our Republican Legacy” podcast, Bacon acknowledged that running for president is something he would like to do.

But the Nebraska congressman stopped short of announcing a campaign.

Instead, Bacon suggested he could be comfortable either leading a national ticket or supporting another Republican whose priorities closely match his own.

That distinction is important. Bacon is expressing interest in the 2028 race, but he has not formally declared himself a presidential candidate.

The possibility of serving as a running mate also appears to remain on the table as Bacon considers what comes after his congressional career.

Retirement From Congress May Not Mean Retirement From Politics

Bacon has already announced that he will leave Congress rather than seek another term representing Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.

However, he has repeatedly suggested that his departure from Capitol Hill does not necessarily mean he is finished with public service.

Bacon previously said he would consider another opportunity if he believed he could make a meaningful difference.

His latest remarks reinforce that message.

Rather than completely withdrawing from national politics, Bacon appears interested in remaining involved in the Republican Party’s debate over its future direction.

Bacon Wants GOP Leadership Focused on Character and Values

Bacon also outlined some of the qualities he wants to see in the Republican Party’s next generation of national leadership.

The congressman emphasized decency, humanity and Christian principles, arguing that political leaders should demonstrate those values through their conduct.

His comments provide an early indication of the message Bacon could emphasize if he eventually decides to pursue the Republican presidential nomination.

They also highlight an important distinction between Bacon and some other prominent figures within today’s GOP.

Bacon has generally been identified with the more traditional wing of the Republican Party and has publicly emphasized what he describes as traditional conservative principles.

Bacon Hasn’t Been Afraid to Disagree With Trump

Bacon has represented Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District since 2017.

Before entering Congress, he spent nearly three decades in the U.S. Air Force and eventually rose to the rank of brigadier general.

That military experience has played an important role in his views on defense, foreign affairs and America’s relationships with its allies.

Although Bacon has supported numerous Republican priorities during his time in Washington, he has also publicly disagreed with President Donald Trump on some issues.

Those differences have been particularly visible on foreign policy and national security.

Bacon has argued for maintaining strong American alliances, including NATO, and has called for what he describes as a more traditional Republican approach to foreign policy.

In a recent CNN interview, Bacon said he was interested in seeing a “Reagan-type Republican” emerge in 2028, pointing specifically to traditional conservative principles, strong alliances and a “peace through strength” approach to national security.

The Republican Party Is Already Looking Toward 2028

The 2028 presidential election remains more than two years away, but discussions about the Republican Party’s post-Trump future are already beginning.

President Trump cannot seek another term in 2028 under the Constitution’s two-term limit, meaning Republicans will eventually need to select a new standard-bearer.

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the prominent Republicans receiving early attention as possible contenders. Reuters reported this week that discussions about the party’s future are already taking place as Republicans debate which parts of Trump’s political movement should continue after his presidency.

Bacon would bring a noticeably different political profile to such a contest.

He is a military veteran, longtime Republican lawmaker and self-described traditional conservative who has demonstrated a willingness to disagree publicly with Trump.

Could Don Bacon Actually Run in 2028?

For now, that question remains unanswered.

Bacon has expressed genuine interest in continuing his political career, but there is a significant difference between considering a presidential campaign and formally entering one.

A potential candidate must weigh fundraising, national support, organization and the political environment before launching a White House bid.

Bacon appears to be leaving his options open.

He could pursue the Republican presidential nomination, potentially consider a vice presidential opportunity, support another candidate or find a different way to remain active in public life.

What is clear is that Bacon does not appear ready to disappear from the national political conversation when his congressional career ends.
