Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is publicly criticizing Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), accusing him of delaying action on the SAVE America Act because he does not want Republican senators to take a politically difficult vote ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Speaking Thursday during an appearance on Newsmax’s Finnerty, Luna argued that Senate leadership is relying on the legislative filibuster instead of moving forward with a bill that many Republicans—and President Donald Trump—have strongly supported.

Luna Says Senate Leadership Is Avoiding A Tough Vote

Luna said she believes the Senate has the opportunity to act but lacks the political will to do so.

According to the Florida congresswoman, she has heard directly that some Republican leaders do not want to force members to cast a vote on the legislation so close to the midterm elections.

Her comments add to growing frustration among conservatives who want the Senate to prioritize election security legislation before voters head to the polls next year.

Luna Says Voters Support Election Security

Luna also argued that the Senate is increasingly out of step with the priorities of everyday Americans.

She pointed to strong public support for voter identification requirements, saying Americans overwhelmingly favor measures designed to protect the integrity of U.S. elections.

According to Luna, many voters view secure elections as a bipartisan issue and believe Congress should move more aggressively to strengthen confidence in the election process.

What Is The SAVE America Act?

The SAVE America Act is one of the Republican Party’s highest-profile election reform proposals.

The House of Representatives has already approved the legislation, but it remains stalled in the Senate because Republicans do not currently have the 60 votes needed to overcome a legislative filibuster.

If enacted, the bill would:

• Require voters to present valid identification when casting a ballot.

Luna Questions Mitch McConnell’s Continued Service

During the interview, Luna also addressed the extended absence of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has been away from the Senate after being hospitalized on June 14.

While wishing McConnell a full recovery, Luna said she believes lawmakers who are unable to fulfill their responsibilities should step aside.

McConnell, 84, has already announced he will not seek another term and is expected to retire when his current Senate term expires in January.

Luna argued that elected officials have an obligation to actively represent their constituents and suggested that prolonged medical absences make it difficult to effectively serve the public.

Luna expanded her criticism by saying Congress needs a new generation of leaders capable of handling the demanding pace of public service.
