Here’s what was named.

As Republicans begin looking beyond President Donald Trump’s second term, one of the party’s most influential donors is already signaling who he believes could lead the GOP into the next presidential election.

Billionaire investor Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of the hedge fund Citadel, indicated this week that he would likely support Secretary of State Marco Rubio if Rubio and Vice President JD Vance were to compete for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028.

Ken Griffin Signals Support for Marco Rubio

During an interview at the prestigious Allen & Company conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, Griffin was asked which Republican leader he would back in a potential 2028 primary.

According to Axios, Griffin pointed to his long history of supporting Rubio, suggesting he would be naturally inclined to back the Florida Republican once again. While he discussed his past support, Griffin did not reveal whether he would make financial contributions to a future campaign.

Griffin’s comments are notable because he remains one of the Republican Party’s largest and most closely watched political donors.

Griffin Has Backed Rubio for Years

This is far from the first time Griffin has supported Rubio.

He was a major financial supporter during Rubio’s 2016 presidential campaign, when the Florida senator sought the Republican nomination before Donald Trump ultimately secured the nomination and won the presidency.

Griffin has also supported other Republican candidates over the years. During the 2024 GOP primary, he donated $5 million to a super PAC supporting former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, according to The Associated Press.

After the Republican primary concluded, Griffin later confirmed that he voted for President Trump in the 2024 general election.

Past Differences Over JD Vance

Griffin has also reportedly expressed reservations about Vice President JD Vance in the past.

According to Axios reporter Alex Isenstadt’s book Revenge: The Inside Story of Trump’s Return to Power, Griffin privately encouraged then-candidate Donald Trump not to choose Vance as his running mate during the 2024 campaign.

Although those reports have fueled speculation about Griffin’s political preferences, the billionaire has continued supporting Republican candidates and remains an influential voice among conservative donors.

Rubio Praises JD Vance

Despite Griffin’s apparent preference for Rubio, the secretary of state has repeatedly praised Vice President Vance and has indicated he would not challenge him for the Republican nomination if Vance decides to run.

Rubio previously said that if JD Vance enters the 2028 presidential race, he expects Vance to become the Republican nominee and said he would support his campaign from the start, according to Vanity Fair.

Rubio’s statement has led many political observers to believe that leading Republicans may seek to avoid a divisive primary if Vance enters the race.

The 2028 GOP Conversation Is Already Underway

Although the next presidential election remains several years away, discussions about the future of the Republican Party are already gaining momentum.

With President Trump continuing to shape the direction of the GOP, attention is increasingly turning toward the party’s next generation of leaders. Figures such as Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are frequently mentioned as potential contenders, and endorsements from prominent conservative donors like Ken Griffin are likely to receive increased scrutiny as the 2028 campaign approaches.

According to Forbes, Griffin’s net worth exceeds $51 billion, making him one of the wealthiest investors in America and one of the Republican Party’s most influential financial supporters. As the political landscape evolves, his views on the future of the GOP are expected to remain closely watched.
