Here’s what is going on.
A growing dispute over immigration enforcement and the authority of the U.S. Supreme Court is exposing new divisions inside the Democratic Party after New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani suggested he would not accept a recent Supreme Court decision supporting President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.
The controversy quickly drew criticism from an unexpected source: Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who warned that refusing to follow Supreme Court rulings could create the very constitutional crisis many Democrats have spent years accusing President Trump of causing.
Fetterman Sounds the Alarm
Speaking during an appearance on Saturday in America with host Kayleigh McEnany, Fetterman said he has repeatedly argued that despite heated political rhetoric, the Trump administration has continued to comply with court decisions.
Now, he says the silence from many Democrats over Mamdani’s comments raises serious questions about whether the same standard is being applied across the political spectrum.
“I haven’t seen the same outrage now that the mayor of New York is saying he’s willing to defy the Supreme Court,” Fetterman said.
He argued that public officials have a duty to respect the decisions of the nation’s highest court, regardless of political disagreements.
“When leaders of America’s largest city say they won’t honor a Supreme Court ruling, that’s when you’re talking about a constitutional crisis,” Fetterman said. He added that many members of his own party have either defended Mamdani or chosen not to criticize his remarks.
Trump Scores Two Major Supreme Court Victories
Fetterman’s comments came just days after the Supreme Court handed the Trump administration two significant victories on immigration policy.
The first ruling determined that migrants stopped before entering the United States are not legally entitled to apply for asylum.
The second ruling allows the administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain Haitian and Syrian migrants while legal challenges continue in lower courts.
Together, the decisions give the Trump administration broader authority to enforce immigration laws, tighten asylum procedures, and continue efforts to reduce temporary immigration protections.
For supporters of President Trump, the rulings represent another major legal victory for his border security agenda.
Mamdani Rejects the Court’s Decision
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Temporary Protected Status, Mamdani released a video stating that the decision was not one his administration would ever accept.
His remarks immediately sparked criticism from those who argue that elected officials should respect Supreme Court decisions, even when they disagree with the outcome.
Fetterman suggested that failing to condemn those comments weakens previous Democratic arguments about defending the rule of law and respecting America’s constitutional institutions.
Democratic Divide Continues to Grow
The dispute also highlights growing ideological divisions within the Democratic Party.
Fetterman has increasingly warned that the party’s progressive wing is moving too far left and risks alienating moderate voters ahead of future elections.
Several progressive candidates—including Zohran Mamdani in New York City, Graham Planter in Maine, Nithya Raman in Los Angeles, Janeese Lewis George in Washington, D.C., and several left-wing candidates in New York—have fueled a broader debate over where Democrats are headed.
Why This Matters
Immigration, border security, and the authority of the Supreme Court are expected to remain among the most important issues heading into the next election cycle.
As President Trump continues advancing his immigration agenda through the courts, disagreements within the Democratic Party over how to respond are becoming increasingly visible—raising new questions about the party’s message, leadership, and strategy moving forward.
