Democrats Going Further Left?
Political strategist Dick Morris believes the Democratic Party is preparing for another major shift to the left following its loss of the White House, arguing that history shows Democrats often embrace more progressive candidates after presidential defeats.
During an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Saturday Report,” Morris said previous election losses have repeatedly pushed the Democratic Party toward candidates with more liberal agendas, and he believes the same pattern could play out before the 2028 presidential election.
According to Morris, Democrats have followed this path for decades. He pointed to the nomination of George McGovern after Vice President Hubert Humphrey lost to Richard Nixon in 1968, along with Walter Mondale and Michael Dukakis becoming the party’s nominees following President Ronald Reagan’s landslide victories during the 1980s.
Morris Sees AOC Emerging as a Top 2028 Contender
Looking ahead to the next presidential race, Morris said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has become one of the Democratic Party’s strongest potential candidates.
He argued that Ocasio-Cortez has generated significant enthusiasm among progressive voters and could ultimately capture the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
If that momentum continues, Morris believes she could become the face of the party’s future.
Michigan Progressive Also Draws Morris’ Attention
Morris also highlighted Michigan political figure Abdul El-Sayed, describing him as part of a new generation of Democratic leaders capable of energizing the party’s progressive base.
According to Morris, El-Sayed has the ability to attract broad support among left-leaning voters and could become an influential figure in Democratic politics over the coming years.
Morris suggested that Republicans could benefit politically if Democrats continue embracing candidates with more progressive platforms, arguing that it would create a sharper contrast between the two parties heading into future elections.
Republicans Continue Making Gains in Michigan
Morris also pointed to Michigan as a state where he believes Republicans are steadily improving their position.
He noted that President Donald Trump carried Michigan in both the 2016 and 2024 presidential elections and argued that many union households and auto workers have increasingly shifted their support toward Republican candidates.
According to Morris, those changing voting patterns could produce additional Republican victories in future statewide elections, including highly competitive U.S. Senate races.
Michigan Remains a Critical Battleground
Michigan continues to rank among the nation’s most important battleground states, with both political parties investing heavily in suburban communities, working-class voters, union households, and independent voters.
The state’s political landscape has become increasingly competitive in recent election cycles, making it one of the most closely watched states heading into future national elections.
2028 Democratic Field Still Wide Open
Although speculation surrounding the 2028 Democratic presidential race is growing, no major candidate has officially entered the contest.
Several Democratic governors, members of Congress, and other national political figures have been mentioned as possible contenders, but the nomination process remains more than two years away.
For now, Morris believes the Democratic Party is following a familiar historical pattern—one that could once again move the party further left as it searches for its next presidential nominee.
