Bloomberg Jumps Into Fight For Democrats
Billionaire Michael Bloomberg is making a major financial move ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, committing approximately $80 million to help Democrats win key races and challenge Republican control of Congress.
The former New York City mayor is directing much of his political spending toward competitive House races, where Democrats are hoping to gain enough seats to take back the majority in November.
According to a report from The New York Times, Bloomberg’s contributions are being distributed throughout September and October, providing a significant financial boost to Democratic candidates and political organizations during the final weeks of the campaign.
The spending comes as Republicans are mounting their own aggressive fundraising and advertising efforts to defend their congressional majorities and protect President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda.
Millions Flowing Into Key Congressional Races
At least $50 million of Bloomberg’s planned spending is focused on House contests, reflecting the importance of the chamber in determining the direction of Washington over the next two years.
That includes $24 million for Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization Bloomberg helped establish that advocates for stricter gun laws.
Another $16 million is going to House Majority PAC, a political organization working to elect Democrats to the House of Representatives.
Additional contributions are supporting Democratic candidates in Senate races, gubernatorial contests, and other important elections across the country.
Bloomberg’s financial involvement could help Democrats expand their television advertising, digital campaigns, and voter outreach efforts in districts where election results are expected to be close.
For Republicans, the spending represents another challenge in an election season already dominated by substantial contributions from wealthy political donors.
Democrats Looking To Regain Control
Democrats are attempting to regain control of the House, which would give them greater power to challenge Trump’s policies and influence congressional investigations, spending legislation, and other major decisions.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has welcomed Bloomberg’s involvement, pointing to the billionaire’s previous financial support for Democratic congressional candidates.
Bloomberg played an important role in financing Democratic campaigns during the 2018 midterm elections, when the party successfully captured control of the House.
His advisers reportedly want Democrats to win more than a narrow majority this November, arguing that a larger advantage would make it easier for party leaders to advance legislation and maintain control of the chamber.
That strategy could place additional pressure on Republican candidates defending competitive districts in the final stretch of the campaign.
Trump And Republicans Fighting Back
Bloomberg’s spending announcement comes as Trump is directing substantial financial resources toward helping Republicans maintain their position in Congress.
Trump announced Tuesday that more than $300 million had already been spent on Republican election efforts, with total spending expected to exceed $400 million by Election Day.
The money is supporting advertising, campaign events, voter outreach, and efforts to encourage Republican participation at the polls.
Republicans have also benefited from major contributions by other wealthy supporters, including billionaire Elon Musk.
The competing financial commitments illustrate just how much is at stake in the November elections, with both political parties investing heavily in determining which side controls Capitol Hill.
Bloomberg Has A History Of Major Political Spending
Bloomberg, who previously sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, has long been one of the party’s most influential financial supporters.
His unsuccessful presidential campaign cost more than $1 billion, demonstrating his willingness to invest substantial personal resources in political causes and candidates.
However, Bloomberg has not always agreed with the Democratic Party’s more progressive factions.
His political adviser, Howard Wolfson, has described him as a centrist who remains concerned about the party moving further to the left on certain issues.
Despite those concerns, Bloomberg continues to support Democratic candidates and organizations he believes can influence the country’s political direction.
His latest contributions also include support for Democratic candidates seeking governorships and Senate seats in competitive states.
Major Stakes In November
The growing involvement of billionaire donors on both sides is raising the financial stakes of an already closely watched election.
Republicans are working to preserve their congressional majorities and maintain momentum behind Trump’s agenda, while Democrats are hoping voter dissatisfaction and substantial campaign spending will help them regain political power.
With Election Day scheduled for November 3, both parties have limited time to turn their financial resources into votes.
Bloomberg’s $80 million commitment gives Democrats another source of support as they compete against Republican fundraising operations.
But while political advertising and campaign contributions can influence the electoral landscape, money alone cannot guarantee victory.
Ultimately, voters will decide whether Republicans retain control of Congress or Democrats succeed in shifting the balance of power in Washington.
The results could determine the future of Trump’s legislative priorities and the direction of American politics for the remainder of his presidency.
