Chris Cuomo is offering a striking explanation for what went wrong for Democrats in the 2024 presidential election.

The NewsNation host and former CNN anchor claims former President Joe Biden was so angry about being pressured to abandon his reelection campaign that he deliberately made the Democratic Party’s path to victory more difficult.

Cuomo specifically argues that Biden delayed his withdrawal and quickly endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris as a way of responding to Democratic leaders who wanted him out of the race.

There is an important distinction, however: Cuomo has not presented evidence proving Biden intentionally sabotaged his own party.

“I believe he wanted to punish them for not letting him run again,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo also claimed Biden effectively forced Harris on Democratic leaders by endorsing her immediately after leaving the race.

Again, Cuomo did not provide direct evidence demonstrating that Biden’s decisions were part of an intentional effort to make Democrats lose.

Mediaite, which reported on Cuomo’s remarks, similarly noted that he did not explain how Biden supposedly forced the Democratic Party to select Harris.

What Actually Happened Before Biden Left the Race

Biden entered 2024 expecting to seek a second term against former President Donald Trump.

That campaign changed dramatically following the June 27 presidential debate.

Biden’s performance generated intense concern within the Democratic Party and led to increasing pressure from elected Democrats and other party figures for him to reconsider his candidacy.

Biden initially resisted those demands.

Then, on July 21, 2024, he announced that he was ending his reelection campaign.

Biden endorsed Harris shortly afterward, setting off a remarkably compressed presidential campaign.

Harris ultimately secured the Democratic nomination and faced Trump in November.

Cuomo believes the timing and manner of Biden’s departure were influenced by anger toward his own party.

The publicly known sequence of events confirms the late withdrawal and immediate Harris endorsement. It does not, by itself, establish Cuomo’s claim that Biden acted with the intention of hurting Democrats.

Trump received 312 electoral votes, compared with 226 for Harris, according to the official Electoral College tally maintained by the National Archives.

Trump also won the national popular vote.

The victory returned Trump to the White House four years after his 2020 defeat.

Because Biden withdrew in late July, Harris had only a little more than three months to transition from vice president to presidential nominee and persuade voters to give Democrats another four years in the White House.
