Trump’s Shocking Advice To Mamdani

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met at Gracie Mansion on Monday for a lengthy discussion covering housing, immigration and the future of America’s largest city.

The approximately 90-minute meeting brought together two political figures who have frequently disagreed in public but have developed a noticeably warmer working relationship since Mamdani’s election.

Trump was in New York ahead of his scheduled address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. The meeting marked another face-to-face discussion between the president and the New York mayor as the two governments consider whether they can cooperate on several major city priorities.

Trump Offers Warm Words for Mamdani

Following the meeting, Trump spoke positively about Mamdani and said he hoped the mayor would succeed.

“I certainly hope he will be a great mayor,” Trump told reporters.

Trump said his primary concern was seeing New York City succeed and suggested that Mamdani has significant potential as mayor.

The comments were notable given the sharp disagreements between the two men during the previous mayoral campaign.

Trump also reflected on his long history with Gracie Mansion, saying he had visited the official mayoral residence many times during his years as a New York businessman.

The president described the mansion as a special place and recalled dealing with a number of previous New York City mayors.

“Hopefully, you’re going to be a great one,” Trump told Mamdani.

AP described the meeting as another sign of the unexpectedly cordial relationship that has developed between the Republican president and the democratic socialist mayor.

Massive Sunnyside Yard Housing Proposal Discussed

Housing emerged as one of the most significant topics of the meeting.

Mamdani is seeking federal cooperation for the potential redevelopment of Sunnyside Yard, the enormous rail complex in Queens that officials have discussed developing for decades.

The mayor has promoted the project as an opportunity to create an entirely new residential neighborhood in New York City.

New York City officials have said Sunnyside Yard has the potential to produce more than 10,000 new homes while supporting more than 30,000 jobs.

Mamdani said a project of that scale cannot move forward without substantial cooperation from the federal government.

“What we’re talking about is something very rare in our city,” Mamdani said, describing the possibility of creating an entirely new neighborhood.

Reports indicate that Mamdani is seeking approximately $21 billion in federal support for the broader development proposal.

Trump Says Federal Cooperation Would Be Necessary

Trump did not announce a federal funding commitment during the meeting.

However, he acknowledged that the scale of the Sunnyside Yard project means Washington would almost certainly have to play a role.

“Sunnyside’s a big job,” Trump said.

The president said he had been familiar with development proposals involving the Queens location for decades and described it as an attractive site.

Trump also noted that a project of this magnitude would require numerous federal approvals and potentially federal money.

Current plans remain at an early stage, and Mamdani has acknowledged that substantial financial, engineering and regulatory challenges would have to be resolved before major construction could begin.

Housing Costs Remain Major NYC Concern

The discussion comes as housing affordability continues to be one of the most prominent issues facing New York City.

Mamdani has made expanding the housing supply a major part of his administration’s agenda.

City officials argue that projects involving publicly controlled or underused land could help create additional housing in a city where available space is limited.

Speaking previously about Sunnyside Yard, Mamdani said the city’s limited land supply makes large redevelopment opportunities especially important.

He also acknowledged that the Sunnyside proposal would require a long-term commitment because of the enormous investment involved.

Immigration Remains an Area of Disagreement

Housing was not the only major issue discussed inside Gracie Mansion.

Immigration also played an important role in Monday’s conversation.

Mamdani said he raised concerns involving Temporary Protected Status and federal immigration enforcement policies affecting New York City.

The mayor specifically discussed immigrants whose federal protections have been affected by Trump administration policy.

Mamdani acknowledged after the meeting that immigration remains one of the clearest areas of disagreement between the two administrations.

He said both leaders have been open about holding different approaches and beliefs on immigration.

The disagreement is broader than Monday’s meeting. Earlier in September, the Mamdani administration joined other local governments in challenging a new federal public-charge rule affecting immigration decisions.

Mamdani Says He Will Continue Working With Trump

Despite those differences, Mamdani said he intends to continue communicating directly with Trump when cooperation could produce results for New York City.

The mayor said he made that commitment during his campaign and has maintained the same approach since taking office.

His position is that ideological disagreements should not prevent city officials from working with Washington on issues where cooperation is possible.

That approach has produced an unusual political relationship between Mamdani and Trump.

The Sunnyside Yard proposal may become one of the clearest tests of whether the Trump administration and Mamdani administration can translate their increasingly cordial relationship into a concrete federal-city partnership.

For now, no federal funding agreement has been announced.

But with both sides continuing discussions, the future of the massive Queens development project — and the evolving relationship between Trump and Mamdani — is likely to remain closely watched.
