President Donald Trump received a memorable honor Sunday as he helped launch a historic motorsports event in the heart of the nation’s capital, putting the White House at the center of a patriotic celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump took an honorary lap around the Freedom 250 Grand Prix course in the presidential limousine, commonly known as “The Beast,” before the racing action began.
The appearance gave Trump a prominent ceremonial role in the first INDYCAR race ever held in Washington, D.C.

With spectators gathered along the temporary street circuit, the presidential motorcade made its way around the course ahead of the race.

The president later delivered one of the biggest moments of the afternoon when he personally waved the green flag, officially sending the INDYCAR field racing through the streets of the nation’s capital.
The unusual scene combined the presidency, American motorsports and the celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary.
Trump also spent time speaking with drivers before the competition began.
Asked by FOX Sports reporter Jamie Little what he wanted most from the event, Trump focused on the safety of those competing and the enjoyment of the spectators.
The president said he hoped everyone would remain safe and have an enjoyable experience. His message to the drivers was equally straightforward: He wished them luck and told them to have fun.

Historic Race Comes To Nation’s Capital
The Freedom 250 was more than an ordinary stop on the INDYCAR calendar.

Trump Meets With INDYCAR Drivers
Among the prominent drivers competing was Álex Palou, who entered the weekend leading the INDYCAR championship standings after an impressive 2026 season.
Palou secured the pole position for the Washington race after collecting six victories during the season. He entered the event with a substantial points advantage over Kyle Kirkwood and David Malukas.
Palou had already experienced another memorable Washington moment earlier in the year when he participated in the unveiling of the Freedom 250 course and visited the White House.
The champion driver later described the experience of entering the Oval Office and meeting Trump as something he would never forget.
Although Palou was born outside the United States, he expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities he has received in America.
The racing star credited the country with giving him the chance to build a successful INDYCAR career, become a champion and establish a family in the United States.
A White House Visit Palou Won’t Forget
Palou’s earlier White House visit also produced a humorous moment.
While meeting Trump and members of his team in the Oval Office, Palou and others were sprayed with the president’s branded cologne.
The unusual encounter apparently became another cherished memory for the INDYCAR champion.
Palou indicated that the entire White House experience — from seeing the Oval Office to meeting the president — was something he hoped to eventually tell his children and grandchildren about.
