Judge Blocks Trump's Plan To Relocate FBI Headquarters To DC, Is This Unfair?

Paxton Calls Out Talarico

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is questioning a surprising development in the Texas U.S. Senate race after a former senior staffer for Republican Sen. John Cornyn joined the campaign of Paxton’s Democratic opponent.

Paxton, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, said Monday that he was surprised to learn that Jacob Smith, who previously spent five years working as Cornyn’s deputy legislative director, is now serving as policy director for Democratic state Sen. James Talarico.

The staffing decision is drawing attention because Paxton defeated Cornyn in the Republican primary. Now, a former Cornyn aide is helping shape policy for the Democrat attempting to defeat Paxton in the general election.

During an appearance on Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Paxton said the development caught him off guard.

Paxton said he was “kind of shocked” and suggested that financial considerations could explain why someone with extensive experience working for Republican lawmakers would join a Democratic Senate campaign.

He then directed most of his criticism toward Talarico.

Paxton Questions Talarico’s Political Shift

Paxton argued that Talarico is attempting to present a more moderate image to Texas voters than his previous political record would suggest.

The Republican nominee pointed to Talarico’s past votes, public comments and interviews, arguing that voters should examine the Democrat’s full record rather than relying exclusively on his general election campaign message.

Paxton characterized several of Talarico’s previous positions as being on the socialist left, although that description reflects Paxton’s political assessment of his opponent rather than a neutral classification.

According to Paxton, Talarico has moved away from emphasizing some of the positions and rhetoric that previously defined his political career.

Paxton said the change was predictable as the Democrat attempts to win support from a broader group of Texas voters.

The criticism highlights what could become one of the central arguments of the Senate campaign: whether Talarico represents a moderate alternative for Texas voters or whether, as Paxton contends, his legislative history shows a significantly more liberal political philosophy.

Faith Could Become an Issue in the Campaign

Paxton also questioned the way Talarico has emphasized his Christian faith during his rise in Democratic politics.

Talarico has attracted national attention for discussing Christianity alongside his political beliefs. Paxton argues that the Democrat is presenting himself as a moderate Christian voice while moving away from political positions that could prove less popular with conservative Texas voters.

Religion can be a particularly significant subject in Texas politics, where evangelical Christians and other faith-based voters remain an important part of the electorate.

For voters evaluating the candidates, the debate could therefore extend beyond traditional Republican-versus-Democrat disagreements and into larger questions about faith, political philosophy and the role of government.

Former Cornyn Aide Has Deep Republican Experience

Smith’s background makes his involvement in the Democratic campaign particularly noteworthy.

In addition to spending five years as Cornyn’s deputy legislative director, Smith previously worked with other Republican lawmakers in Washington.

He served on the House Science Committee under Republican Rep. Frank Lucas of Oklahoma and previously worked as a legislative aide to Republican Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi.

That résumé gives Smith years of experience inside Republican congressional offices before his decision to join Talarico’s campaign.

Campaign professionals and congressional staffers sometimes work across ideological or party lines during their careers, but Smith’s move is likely to receive additional scrutiny because of the circumstances surrounding the Texas Senate contest.

Paxton defeated Smith’s former boss in the Republican primary and is now facing the candidate Smith is helping in the general election.

Cornyn Still Backs the Republican Ticket

Despite his former staffer’s decision, Cornyn has indicated that he remains behind the GOP in the November election.

Cornyn’s spokesperson told NOTUS that the senator plans to back the GOP ticket in the upcoming fall election.

That could help Paxton as Republicans attempt to unite following a hard-fought primary.

Primary elections can expose major disagreements within a political party, but candidates generally need supporters of their former rivals to return to the fold before a general election.

For Paxton, consolidating Republican voters will be especially important as Democrats attempt to make the Texas race competitive.

Texas Senate Race Carries National Importance

The contest could have consequences extending far beyond Texas.

Control of the U.S. Senate affects everything from federal spending and taxes to border security, energy policy, judicial confirmations and the ability of President Donald Trump to advance his administration’s agenda through Congress.

Texas has remained one of the most important Republican states in national politics, making any competitive statewide Senate contest significant for both parties.

Paxton is expected to emphasize his conservative record and alignment with Republican priorities, while Talarico will likely seek support from Democrats, independents and voters looking for an alternative to the GOP nominee.

For conservative voters, particularly Texans who followed the Republican primary closely, Smith’s move from Cornyn’s Senate operation to Talarico’s campaign adds an unusual wrinkle to the race.

However, the larger issue for voters will be the records of the two candidates themselves.

Paxton is clearly attempting to make Talarico’s previous statements and legislative votes a major part of that discussion. Talarico, meanwhile, will have an opportunity to explain his positions and challenge Paxton’s characterization of his political record.

As November approaches, Texas voters will decide which candidate better represents their priorities on the economy, immigration, energy, taxes, public safety, religious liberty and the future direction of the country.

With the balance of power in Washington potentially at stake, the battle between Paxton and Talarico could become one of the Senate races to watch heading into Election Day.
