Democrats Called Flat Out Crazy

Wisconsin Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany is sounding the alarm ahead of Tuesday’s closely watched gubernatorial primary, warning voters that the Democratic Party’s move to the left could dramatically reshape the race for governor.

Tiffany, the Republican front-runner, focused much of his criticism on Democratic state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist who has emerged as a leading contender for her party’s nomination.

During a Monday appearance on Newsmax’s “Finnerty,” Tiffany argued that Hong’s rise represents a much broader transformation taking place inside the Democratic Party.

Tiffany Warns About Democratic Party’s Leftward Shift

Tiffany said Democratic leaders have moved increasingly toward progressive policies that he believes are far outside the views of many ordinary Wisconsin voters.

He predicted that some rank-and-file Democrats could be surprised if Hong emerges victorious from Tuesday’s primary.

Tiffany described the potential November contest as a choice between what he considers conservative “common sense” and a far more expansive progressive approach to government.

The Wisconsin congressman specifically pointed to controversies surrounding Hong’s past positions and statements involving policing, prisons, government-supported grocery stores and Thanksgiving.

Those issues have increasingly become ammunition for Republicans seeking to portray Hong as too progressive for a politically competitive state such as Wisconsin.

Hong’s Past Positions Draw Republican Scrutiny

Hong’s record has attracted growing national attention as the primary approaches.

Republicans have highlighted her previous support for sweeping changes to policing and the criminal justice system. They have also repeatedly pointed to a since-deleted 2020 social media post in which Hong called for canceling Thanksgiving while criticizing the holiday’s historical origins.

Hong has since sought to provide additional context around some of those positions as scrutiny of her campaign has intensified.

The controversies nevertheless give Tiffany and other Republicans an opportunity to make ideology a central issue heading into a possible general-election matchup.

For conservative Wisconsin voters, questions surrounding taxes, crime, government spending and the proper size of government could become major dividing lines in November.

Tiffany Warns Republicans Against Crossover Strategy

There is also an unusual political calculation unfolding ahead of the Democratic primary.

Some Republicans reportedly believe Hong would be the easiest Democrat for Tiffany to defeat in the general election and have considered supporting her in the Democratic primary for that reason.

Tiffany strongly discouraged that strategy.

Although he acknowledged that some Republicans view Hong’s progressive record as a political liability, Tiffany said he does not want GOP voters helping her secure the Democratic nomination.

He also argued that the differences between Hong and the other Democratic candidates are smaller than voters might assume.

Tiffany pointed to a recent Democratic debate, claiming Hong’s opponents failed to forcefully confront her over controversial positions that Republicans are now emphasizing.

Wisconsin Governor Race Could Become National Battleground

The fight carries significance well beyond Wisconsin.

The Badger State has developed a reputation for razor-thin elections and remains one of America’s most important political battlegrounds.

That makes the race for governor especially important as Republicans and Democrats compete over taxes, education, public safety, energy, government spending and other issues affecting Wisconsin families.

A Hong victory in the Democratic primary would also provide another test of whether democratic socialist candidates can expand their influence beyond heavily Democratic districts and succeed statewide in competitive territory.

Republicans, meanwhile, are likely to argue that the Democratic Party has moved substantially further left than the voters who traditionally supported it.

Tiffany Blames Anti-Trump Politics

Tiffany believes another factor is contributing to the Democratic Party’s ideological shift: intense opposition to President Donald Trump.

He attributed the rise of progressive candidates in part to what Republicans commonly call “Trump derangement syndrome,” a phrase Trump supporters use to describe what they consider an excessive political reaction to the president.

That argument could become increasingly important if Tiffany wins the Republican nomination.

Trump has backed Tiffany, making the Wisconsin governor’s race another potential test of the president’s political strength in a state where both parties have fought fiercely for independent and working-class voters.

Tuesday’s Primary Sets the Stage

Wisconsin voters will ultimately determine whether the governor’s race becomes the ideological showdown Tiffany is predicting.

For Republicans, the election presents an opportunity to make the case for lower taxes, restrained government spending and tougher public-safety policies.

For Democrats, Tuesday’s result could reveal whether voters want the party to continue moving in a more progressive direction or nominate a candidate closer to its traditional establishment.

Either way, Wisconsin appears headed toward another intensely competitive election.

And if Tiffany and Hong ultimately face each other in November, voters could be presented with one of the clearest ideological contrasts of the 2026 election cycle.
