Are Americans forgetting a key Trump achievement?
President Donald Trump says Americans are already moving on from one of what he considers the biggest accomplishments of his second administration: securing the U.S.-Mexico border.
Speaking with reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump argued that his administration’s success in reducing illegal immigration has been so dramatic that many voters no longer view border security as a major issue.
According to Trump, even members of his own team have encouraged him to spend less time discussing the border because they believe most Americans now assume the problem has largely been solved.
“Nobody wants to hear about the border anymore,” Trump said his speechwriters have told him, adding that he jokingly responded, “I should’ve taken a couple of years to do it.”
Trump suggested that from a purely political standpoint, stretching out the crackdown on illegal immigration might have kept the issue in the headlines longer. Instead, he said his administration acted quickly because the situation demanded immediate action.
The president also argued that many political victories are quickly forgotten, saying the public often has a short memory when major problems are resolved.
Trump Defends Border Crackdown
Trump maintained that he inherited what he described as one of the worst border crises in American history from former President Joe Biden.
He argued that millions of illegal immigrants entered the United States under the previous administration and claimed the country experienced an unprecedented breakdown in immigration enforcement.
Trump also repeated concerns that individuals with criminal backgrounds and those released from foreign institutions were able to cross into the United States because of weakened border policies.
For that reason, he said his administration had little choice but to move aggressively to restore border security instead of taking a slower political approach.
DHS Reports Strong Immigration Enforcement
The administration has continued highlighting immigration statistics that officials say demonstrate the effectiveness of the new policies.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, more than 356,000 illegal immigrants have been deported during fiscal year 2026.
Earlier this year, DHS also announced that U.S. Border Patrol recorded an entire year with zero releases of apprehended illegal immigrants into the interior of the country.
Officials have explained that “zero releases” does not mean illegal border crossings completely stopped. Instead, it means migrants taken into custody were no longer being released into the United States while awaiting immigration proceedings.
Supporters of the administration have pointed to those numbers as evidence that stricter enforcement measures are producing results.
Spain’s Migrant Crisis Sparks Comparison
Trump’s comments came after reporters asked him about dramatic scenes in Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta, where videos showing thousands of migrants attempting to enter the enclave quickly spread across social media.
The president said the footage immediately reminded him of what the United States experienced before his administration tightened border enforcement.
“When I saw what happened in Spain,” Trump said, “I thought we had our own version of that. You could even say it was much worse.”
Trump argued that the images serve as a reminder of why his administration prioritized border security immediately after returning to office.
Trump Says Americans Shouldn’t Forget
While immigration may no longer dominate daily headlines, Trump said that should not be mistaken for the issue disappearing. Instead, he argued that the decline in public attention reflects the success of stronger border enforcement rather than a lack of importance.
For many conservatives, border security remains one of the defining issues of Trump’s presidency. The president’s message on Monday was that solving a national crisis should not cause Americans to forget how serious the problem had become—or the policies that he believes brought it under control.
