A far-left Democratic Socialist candidate challenging a sitting House Democrat says there is one issue where he believes President Donald Trump and many Republicans have a valid point: eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending.
The comments come as Democrats prepare for the 2026 midterm elections, with progressive candidates attempting to reshape the party while Republicans argue that voters are rejecting socialist policies and demanding greater accountability in Washington.
Socialist Candidate Finds Common Ground With Republicans
Michigan State Rep. Donavan McKinney, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is running to unseat Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar in Michigan.
During a recent interview with Zeteo News, McKinney acknowledged that Republicans have correctly focused attention on government waste.
“I have to give Republicans credit on one issue,” McKinney said. “I agree with them when it comes to waste, fraud and abuse.”
While agreeing with the general principle, McKinney argued that Republicans are targeting the wrong areas. Instead of focusing on welfare programs or government assistance, he claimed taxpayer dollars are being wasted through subsidies and financial incentives provided to major corporations and wealthy Americans.
According to McKinney, government spending should be scrutinized more closely at the highest levels rather than among low-income assistance programs.
If elected to Congress, he said his priority would be cutting what he considers corporate welfare while increasing oversight of taxpayer spending that benefits the nation’s wealthiest individuals and large businesses.
Campaign Centers On Cost Of Living
McKinney has also built much of his campaign around the rising cost of living and concerns about federal spending.
Speaking at a recent campaign rally, he argued that many Americans continue to struggle financially while Washington spends billions of dollars on overseas military operations.
McKinney said taxpayer money should be redirected toward domestic priorities, including seniors, children, and other vulnerable Americans. He also criticized U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts, arguing those resources could be better spent addressing problems at home.
Throughout his campaign, McKinney has accused leaders in both political parties of becoming disconnected from the economic challenges facing working families.
Progressive Challenge Within The Democratic Party
McKinney’s campaign is part of a broader effort by Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates to move the Democratic Party further to the left.
He is seeking to defeat Rep. Shri Thanedar, who previously distanced himself from the DSA following disagreements over the organization’s position on Israel.
Several DSA-supported candidates have already defeated incumbent House Democrats in states including New York and Colorado, highlighting the growing influence of the party’s progressive wing ahead of the 2026 elections.
Republicans See Political Opportunity
Republicans have pointed to the rise of Democratic Socialist candidates as evidence that the Democratic Party is moving further left.
GOP leaders argue that most Americans oppose socialist policies such as expanded wealth redistribution and greater government control over the economy. They contend that voters are more concerned about inflation, government spending, border security, and economic growth than calls for sweeping ideological change.
With control of the House expected to be highly competitive in 2026, races like McKinney’s are drawing national attention. His acknowledgment that Republicans are right about the need to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse has added another twist to an already closely watched election cycle, even as both parties continue to disagree sharply over where those spending cuts should be made.
