Trump is expected to sign the executive order during a White House ceremony alongside War Secretary Pete Hegseth, Jennifer Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and several military spouses.
Jennifer Hegseth will serve as chair of the newly created commission.
In a statement, she said military spouses have long been an essential part of America’s national defense but often do not receive the recognition they deserve.
She said the commission will work to identify and remove barriers facing military families while ensuring their voices are heard at the highest levels of government.
The executive order also calls for Trump to appoint an executive director to oversee the commission’s operations.
Christie Mullin, wife of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, will serve as one of approximately 20 military spouses selected to represent the military services, Joint Chiefs of Staff, service secretaries, and senior enlisted leadership.
Markwayne Mullin praised his wife’s longtime commitment to supporting military families, saying her experience and dedication make her well-qualified to help improve opportunities for military spouses across the country.
Military Families Continue To Face Major Challenges
The new commission comes as military families continue to face significant financial and personal challenges.
According to the latest Military Family Lifestyle Survey from Blue Star Families, employment opportunities and income for military spouses remain the top concerns among active-duty families.
Other major issues include extended time away from loved ones during deployments, rising childcare costs, affordable housing, housing allowances, healthcare access, and children’s education.
Frequent moves often make it difficult for military spouses to build long-term careers, while repeated deployments place additional pressure on families raising children and managing households.
Government data from Military OneSource estimates that roughly one million American children currently have at least one parent serving on active duty, underscoring the far-reaching impact military service has on families across the country.
Administration officials say the commission will examine these issues and recommend practical policy solutions that improve quality of life while supporting military readiness.
Building On Trump’s First-Term Record
The initiative builds on several military family policies implemented during Trump’s first term in office.
During his first term, the Trump administration broadened occupational licensing flexibility, helping military spouses maintain their careers when military assignments required their families to relocate.
The White House also encouraged greater access to remote and flexible work opportunities while increasing hiring opportunities for military spouses within the federal government.
In 2018, Trump approved legislation allowing military spouses to keep the same legal state of residence as their active-duty husband or wife, even if military orders required the family to relocate. The law helped simplify state tax filings, voter registration, and other legal requirements for thousands of military families.
