GOP Governors Side With Trump
Nearly two dozen Republican governors are throwing their support behind President Donald Trump’s latest budget effort, urging the U.S. Senate to approve a key budget resolution before lawmakers leave Washington for the August recess.
The 23 Republican governors signed a joint letter Wednesday calling on senators to move quickly, arguing that the proposal is essential for advancing election integrity legislation, strengthening America’s military, and providing additional support for family farmers.
The Republican governors said they fully support President Trump’s request for the Senate to swiftly approve a budget resolution, calling it an important first step toward strengthening election security, reinforcing the nation’s defense, and providing needed support for America’s farmers.
The budget resolution would launch the reconciliation process, allowing Senate Republicans to advance major legislative priorities with a simple majority vote instead of the usual 60-vote threshold.
The governors’ letter was released as White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought and senior legislative adviser James Braid met with Senate Republicans to discuss the administration’s priorities for the package.
One of the administration’s top goals is advancing the SAVE America Act, legislation Republicans say would strengthen election integrity by tightening voter registration safeguards and increasing public confidence in the nation’s elections.
The governors argued that recent reports showing hundreds of thousands of allegedly ineligible individuals on voter registration rolls highlight the need for Congress to act.

They added that approving the budget resolution would allow Republicans to move forward with election integrity measures included in the SAVE America Act.
The letter also backs President Trump’s request for additional defense funding. According to the governors, the proposal would replenish military stockpiles, improve readiness, and strengthen America’s ability to deter foreign adversaries following recent military operations in the Middle East.
Agriculture remains another major priority in the package. The governors said additional assistance for family farmers would help producers weather economic challenges while supporting a stable domestic food supply and helping keep grocery prices in check.
According to Politico, the coordinated show of support is intended to build momentum for Senate Majority Leader John Thune as he works to unite Republicans behind the budget plan.
Although the House has already approved a $95 billion budget framework, Senate Republicans remain divided over the final size of the package. Some lawmakers want additional defense spending, while fiscal conservatives are pushing for a smaller overall bill that limits federal spending.
Among the governors signing the letter were Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden, and West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey.
President Trump also renewed his call for immediate action Wednesday in a post on Truth Social.
“I am calling on the Senate to get this critical first step done before the August recess,” Trump wrote. “This Resolution can be adopted at a simple Majority threshold. GET IT DONE!”
The Senate’s decision in the coming days will determine whether Republicans can move forward with President Trump’s legislative agenda before lawmakers leave for their August recess, making the vote one of the party’s most closely watched priorities this summer.
