Trump Border Czar Issues Warning To NY

The Trump administration is preparing a major immigration enforcement operation in New York, according to Border Czar Tom Homan, who said federal authorities will increase their ICE presence as part of a new crackdown on illegal immigration.

Speaking Monday on Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Homan said New York’s sanctuary policies have made it more difficult for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to carry out arrests, requiring the Department of Homeland Security to devote additional personnel and resources to the state.

FBI Investigating Fire Outside ICE Headquarters

Homan’s comments came just hours after authorities responded to a fire outside 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, a federal building that houses ICE offices and several other government agencies.

Investigators allege a suspect poured what is believed to be gasoline on the building’s entrance before igniting the fire with fireworks. The individual was taken into custody, and the FBI is leading the investigation.

Homan Blames Political Rhetoric for Rising Threats

During the interview, Homan argued that repeated criticism of ICE by some Democratic officials has contributed to an increasingly hostile environment for federal immigration officers.

According to Homan, political messaging can influence a small number of individuals to act recklessly, creating additional risks for law enforcement personnel.

Homan also said he has warned for more than a year that heated rhetoric surrounding immigration enforcement could eventually result in violence targeting ICE officers.

He urged elected officials to allow federal agencies to enforce existing immigration laws without interference.

Trump Administration Plans Expanded ICE Operations

Homan confirmed that the administration has already increased ICE activity in New York and intends to expand those operations even further.

“We’ve already increased our presence in New York,” Homan said. “We’re going to increase it even more. There will be a surge operation in New York. I’m not going to say when.”

The announcement signals another step in the Trump administration’s broader effort to strengthen immigration enforcement in jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal authorities.

Sanctuary Policies Draw Fresh Criticism

Homan specifically criticized New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s decision to end certain cooperation agreements between local jails and ICE through the 287(g) program.

He argued that without those partnerships, ICE agents must conduct more arrests in public locations instead of taking custody of individuals inside secure detention facilities.

According to Homan, arrests that once required a single officer inside a jail now often require larger enforcement teams, increasing both operational costs and safety concerns.

Immigration Enforcement Expected to Intensify

The planned New York operation reflects the administration’s continued focus on expanding immigration enforcement while challenging sanctuary policies adopted by several Democratic-led states and cities.

As federal officials move forward with additional ICE operations, immigration enforcement is expected to remain one of the administration’s top priorities and a central issue in the national debate over border security and public safety.
