A longtime ally of President Donald Trump is reportedly at the center of a growing federal investigation that could have major political consequences.
According to The Wall Street Journal, former Special Government Employee Corey Lewandowski could face a criminal referral as investigators examine contracting decisions made at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership.
No criminal charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Federal Watchdog Reviewing DHS Contracts
The DHS Office of Inspector General has reportedly uncovered evidence that investigators believe warrants further review regarding how certain government contracts were awarded. The agency is now weighing whether to refer its findings to the Justice Department for possible criminal investigation, according to the report.
Current DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who took over the department after President Trump replaced Noem earlier this year, has reportedly cooperated with investigators. The Journal also reported that White House officials have been briefed on portions of the investigation.
Lewandowski Denies Wrongdoing
Lewandowski has rejected the allegations.
Speaking through a representative, he told The Wall Street Journal that he did not award DHS contracts during his time at the department and said investigators have never contacted him regarding the matter.
The White House referred media questions to DHS, while the department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Hundreds Of Millions In Government Spending Under Review
The investigation reportedly centers on hundreds of millions of dollars in DHS contracts approved during Noem’s tenure.
Among the spending decisions being examined are no-bid agreements connected to a $220 million national advertising campaign featuring Noem.
Federal investigators are also reviewing a separate $1 billion warehouse acquisition program that was intended to expand migrant detention capacity. According to published reports, the project was later abandoned, and the warehouses were eventually sold after being purchased for prices reportedly above market value.
Questions About Lewandowski’s Role
Although Lewandowski served as a Special Government Employee rather than a full-time federal official, reports indicate he exercised significant influence over staffing decisions and department contracts.
The Journal reported that he personally signed certain contracts while serving as one of Noem’s closest advisers, a role that has drawn additional scrutiny as investigators continue reviewing the department’s contracting practices.
Personal Allegations Return To The Spotlight
The investigation has also renewed public attention surrounding longstanding allegations about Lewandowski’s relationship with Noem.
The claims resurfaced during a recent Capitol Hill hearing, where Noem declined to directly answer questions regarding the allegations.
What Happens Next?
The DHS inspector general has not announced whether a criminal referral will ultimately be sent to the Justice Department, and no charges have been filed against Lewandowski.
If investigators decide to move forward, the Justice Department would determine whether additional investigation or prosecution is warranted.
For now, the case remains active, and its outcome could have significant legal and political implications as federal investigators continue examining DHS contracting decisions made during Noem’s tenure.
