Another McCain Family Member Tragically Passes Away

The McCain family is facing another devastating loss after Douglas McCain, the eldest son of late Arizona Sen. John McCain, died unexpectedly at the age of 66.

Family members confirmed Doug McCain’s sudden passing this week, prompting an outpouring of condolences from friends, supporters, and longtime political allies connected to the well-known Republican family.

Meghan McCain shared the heartbreaking news Saturday in an emotional message posted to social media.

Meghan McCain said she was heartbroken to announce the unexpected death of her brother Doug, describing him as a kind and joyful person who stood by her side throughout her life.

She described her brother as someone who brought humor, intelligence, and warmth into every room, adding that the memories they shared together would remain close to her heart forever.

According to an obituary released by the family, Douglas McCain passed away suddenly on May 20.

Doug McCain carried on the strong military tradition closely associated with the McCain family. He served for six years as a Navy pilot, flying A-6 Intruder aircraft before later transitioning into a successful career as a commercial pilot with American Airlines.

He became part of the McCain family after John McCain married his mother, Carol Shepp, in 1965 and officially adopted him. Although John McCain and Carol later divorced in 1980, the extended McCain family remained widely known in Republican political circles for decades.

The McCain Institute also honored Douglas McCain in a tribute, remembering him as both a patriot and a loyal friend to many people connected to Sen. McCain’s campaigns, Senate office, and public service initiatives.

John McCain, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and longtime Republican senator, died in 2018 after battling brain cancer. He was 81 years old and remained one of the most recognizable figures in modern American politics.

Douglas McCain is survived by his wife Ashley, his children Caroline and Douglas, his mother Carol Shepp, and several siblings and extended members of the McCain family.

As tributes continue pouring in, many Americans are remembering Douglas McCain not only for his connection to a prominent political family, but also for his military service, aviation career, and commitment to those closest to him.
