A Florida Democrat is facing intense scrutiny after social media users accused her team of digitally altering an official photograph to remove a luxury diamond ring allegedly purchased with misused federal disaster funds.
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democrat from South Florida, was hit with a widely shared Community Note on X after users noticed that a high-value yellow diamond ring appeared to be missing from a recently posted holiday image.
The photo, which featured what appeared to be her official congressional portrait, showed her left ring finger conspicuously bare—despite previous public images showing a large, square-cut yellow diamond valued at more than $100,000.
Social Media Flags Missing Diamond Ring
According to the Community Note, the ring in question is a 3-carat yellow diamond that Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of purchasing with improperly obtained funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“This portrait of Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick appears to have been altered to remove a ring allegedly purchased with $109,000 in FEMA funds,” the note stated.
Within hours, X users began flooding the post with comments questioning the edit and criticizing what they described as an attempt to hide evidence amid a federal investigation.

Federal Indictment and Ethics Investigation
The photo controversy comes as Cherfilus-McCormick faces serious legal trouble. Federal prosecutors indicted the three-term lawmaker last month, alleging she participated in a scheme that improperly diverted approximately $5 million in FEMA funds.
The funds were tied to a COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract awarded in 2021 to a healthcare company connected to her family, according to court filings. Prosecutors allege the overpayments were never returned and were instead used for personal expenses and to support her congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick has also been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee since December 2023.

Authorities allege the diamond ring—officially described as a 3.14-carat “Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond”—was purchased in September 2021, just weeks after the disputed FEMA overpayments were issued.
Prosecutors say Cherfilus-McCormick conspired with several individuals, including her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, to misuse taxpayer funds that were intended for emergency public health staffing.
Staff Blamed for Edited Photo
In response to the backlash, a spokesperson for the congresswoman claimed the photo edit was done by staff without her authorization.
“This action was not directed, approved, or authorized by the Congresswoman,” the spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the alteration was a staff-level decision meant to protect her reputation.
The office also stated that the image is her official 2025 portrait and will not be altered again.
Serious Criminal Charges Filed
Federal prosecutors have charged Cherfilus-McCormick with multiple counts, including theft of government funds, money laundering, making false statements, and campaign finance violations. Each charge carries an associated conspiracy count.
If convicted, she could face decades in federal prison. Her brother, former chief of staff, and an accountant are also facing charges in connection with the alleged scheme.
