Democrat Abandons Her Party?
A shocking scene unfolded in Austin this week when a Texas Democrat lawmaker suddenly walked out of a Democratic National Committee (DNC) strategy call after being told her actions might amount to a felony.
State Rep. Nicole Collier (D) interrupted DNC Chair Ken Martin during the call, cutting him off mid-sentence.
“Sorry, I have to leave,” Collier said. “They said it’s a felony for me to do this. Apparently, I can’t be on the floor or even in the bathroom.”
Collier, visibly rattled, then turned to someone off-camera and added:
“You told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom. No, hold on — bye everybody, I’ve got to go.”
She quickly signed off, leaving top Democrats stunned.
Why It Matters
The incident took place inside the Texas Capitol, where Republicans were pushing forward with a new GOP-backed House map. Democrats had fled the state for weeks in protest, but returned earlier this week under strict rules set by Republican leaders.
According to House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R), any Democrat who left the Capitol had to agree to remain “in the custody” of a state police officer and sign a form pledging to return for votes.
Collier flatly refused — even choosing to sleep overnight inside the Capitol rather than comply.
Democrats Cry Foul, But Rules Are Clear
While it wasn’t immediately clear what specific felony law Collier may have been close to violating, the warning was enough to send her scrambling.
National Democrats, however, tried to spin the moment.
Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) lashed out, bizarrely comparing Collier’s bathroom protest to President Donald Trump’s presidency:
“Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office,” Booker claimed.
Booker went further, saying Republicans were trying to “silence a Black woman.”
The Bigger Picture
The fiasco highlights the deep divide in Texas politics. Republicans are pressing forward with efforts to restore accountability and strengthen election integrity, while Democrats are resorting to stunts, walkouts, and now — bizarre bathroom protests.
For everyday Texans, the spectacle raises serious questions:
- Why are Democrats willing to risk breaking the law rather than doing their jobs?
- Why do national Democrats like Cory Booker leap to personal attacks on Trump instead of addressing real policy issues?
- And why does the DNC continue defending lawmakers who refuse to follow the rules?
Bottom Line
While Republicans in Texas push forward with a clear agenda, Democrats appear increasingly desperate — walking out of votes, hiding in bathrooms, and cutting off their own leadership calls.
This isn’t leadership. It’s chaos inside the Democratic Party.
